Title: Alembic modified Gibson? Vintage GD content.
Post by: edwin on September 01, 2021, 03:46:02 PM
I just came across this video, ca. 1970-71. You can see that Bobby's Gibson has a door cut in the back of it.

Very cool old footage.

I am pretty sure this is from the Scorcese GD documentary "Long Strange Trip". The same guy has a lot of segments ripped from his Blu-Ray copy up on Youtube. We watched in on Amazon Prime a while back, may still be available there. Since it has been a while I can't remember if this sequence is in the actual film or is a DVD extra. Either way good stuff...  Segment 4 Grateful Dead Before Concert and Performance is really funny, that was definitely in the flick.

Pre-Alembic modified I do believe, Edwin.  At least, in Grateful Dead Gear (really good source - and I'm so cool I know a guy who got name-checked in the "Acknowledgements" section.......*), pg. 35, Bobby says he got the 345 in '66 because Bear & Tim Scully wanted to mess with the guts, and the back door was their work.

*For those who have not read this seminal work - or at least not read the Acknowledgements - said name-check is to one Edwin Hurwitz.

But then of course, on pg. 77, there's a a shot of Garcia with the esteemed Mr. Wickersham; Jackson says in the caption that Jer's holding a D-18, when it's 000-45 (same one as in the vid), so maybe there's confusion in re Bobby's Gibson, too.

I think Blair did a great job with his book, although in the subsequent years a lot more information has come to light. I helped as best as I could but if I knew then what I know now.....

I love that circle-singing!

My buddy and were just espousing about how we have so much tech and musical helping tools to try and do what the early Dead did...they had to do it "manually"!

Thanks for posting that.  I'll never tire of seeing these historical documents.

And man alive!  Jerry & Phil sure didn't put on the kid gloves with Bobby's sing, did they?
