<post edit> i was doing this from my phone last night while laughing so hard i could hardly manipulate the keyboard, so i fixed the link, clarified the participants and added more general bloviation.   I couldn't modify the original post, so i had to do it this way instead. Guess i'd better get back to work.   Sheesh!

>> I had Indy String Theory here in Indianapolis go through and restore it to fully working order, which to my surprise barely cost me anything for what an usual instrument this is.<<

So - it started out at: $4,500 +$175 shipping.  (pure speculation here, but i doubt it) Dude got it and realized what a train wreck it was, consigned it to a flipper and now we're at:  $6,898 +$159 Shipping.

WhooOO00OOoo!

>>i'll probably end up sending this bass back to Alembic for a full restoration and refurbishment, <<

here - wait a minute. gotta look for it.....  OK, found it: ha.  ha ha.  ha ha ha ha 🤡

ultimately both the buyer and seller in this fiasco turned out to be fulla... shaving cream.
Where will this poor old girl land next?

Rob, you think these were all the same batch with 75-174? Remember 75-173 that CME had was another almost twin. (still kickin' myself for not rescuing that one before they got it) I just wonder about the ones in between. I don't see a lot of difference. One wonders if they jigged-up and built a half-dozen or so of them all at one go.

Greg, that may have been the case.  173, 174, 219 (SC body that poor_nigel had), 270, the back of flpete1uw’s bass, and there was that other small SC body in Japan I think with what looked like a refinish, they all have very similar grain.  I read somewhere once that they made “a bunch” of basses and guitars from that log, so there are likely others out there as well.

I know for certain, 75-240 is another long-scale birdseye zebra in a Standard Point. 215, 216, 217, and 219 (which was a duplicate number, both zebras) all of those are a Small Standard batch of zebras. Hard to say about 218, but if I was guessing... it's a missing number, supposed to have been one of those 219's or maybe it's out there somewhere too. Interestingly, 75-183 is a zebrawood Omega-cut, but has none of that figure... just long, straight grain. There's at least one more buried deeeep in the Showcase.

I am nuts over this wood too.    Here is mine.

Wow, Dela217, that is beautiful, lots of squiggles and birdseyes, and I like the way the grain is angled in towards the neck.
I belive John Entwistle also had a large body zebrawood (or three, the one in the Met right now and then possibly both a point and omega more like the pattern in yours) in his collection.  Beautiful basses!

Then there is this one.    I would love to own it, but it is for sale at a bass shop in Japan.    I am afraid of the whole overseas purchase process.    Plus it has undergone a serious headstock repair.    Serial number 76-255.

I thought the ringing in my ear was from the last gig 2 nights ago.
Nope it was from here! 215

I believe Mica has called it 'the log' in the past. It's a beautiful chunk of wood.
