With all the Zoom meetings lots of us have been doing for almost a year now, it occurs to me that it might be fun to have a Zoom Alembic Gathering. Any interest out there?

That's such a great idea. I would love to meet you all over Zoom!
-
Me too that would be a great idea Bill. Count me in, it would be good to put faces to basses. :-) ;D 8)
-
Hey, I would LOVE to do it! (I'm free between 10 and 12 8) .). Seriously though, timing would be difficult for this world-wide fan base!
-
Great idea Bill!!

I think it's a fantastic idea, and hope there's some way I can join in.
...I am imagining my Android 7 bursting into flames while trying to pull this task off.
-
Count me in, I'm on Zoom a lot for meetings but also enjoy hanging out with friends on Zoom
-
Good idea but it may be a good idea to come up with some type of format, or concept, as to how people can participate. While I find it nice to see friends on Zoom I haven't found it to be a very satisfying forum for group interaction with the exception of things like open mics where each participant gets a time slot to contribute, or for really small groups of people. Zoom gatherings with larger groups where there are no ground rules or format, IMO, tend to end up with everyone talking over each other, or one or two chatty people dominating the conversation unless someone moderates. The solution may be as simple as giving everyone a short slot to introduce themselves followed by a period for organized follow-up questions/responses. Think "Lord of the Flies" and passing the conch shell. No idea how to deal with the time zone issue when participants live all over the world...
-
Great idea, I’m in, but Stephen does raise some good points, as well as time zone considerations. Maybe a couple zoom gatherings at different times, with a general all present initial and end space, with rotating breakout rooms in between that randomly shuffle participants to allow for smaller group interactions.
-
Maybe we can start with introductions and a show & tell where we can share our individual instruments. Then hang out and share all thoughts Alembic.
Does anyone have a Zoom account? I believe we can do it for free for 40 minutes, and we can log off and back on after 40 minutes. But if anyone has a Zoom account, we can avoid the hassle.

Are you thinking of doing the zoom over this weekend Bill?
-
This weekend might be a little quick. I'm thinking we should take a little more time to plan and give everyone a head's up. Maybe in a week or two? What does everyone think?

I'm in! I'm retired so I'm fine with any time. I do participate in a free 40 minute Zoom meeting every week and find 40 minutes isn't enough. The last Gathering (10th) was about 8 hours long but seemed to FLY by! Time passes so quickly when talking Alembic!
Imagine how MANY Alembics we can see / oogle without the expense of gathering them all in one physical space!
I do not know how much a Zoom meeting costs but we could send funds (via paypal) to the mothership if they have a Zoom account. Just a thought.

As it happens My other half has a paid for zoom account that she is happy for me to use. But it expires in April and won’t be renewing so that is an option. I would be prepared to host it and send the invites. We just need a date & time and a list of attendees with contact details for me to send the invite. Our only cabeat is that, since the alembic forum is not a private forum, my other half does not want the link posted on the forum or on line publicly, only direct to a participant.
Of course if another member would prefer to host then fine, just send me an invite. 😀
-
It might be a good idea to host a small meeting with a few participants across the time zones to test for practicalities etc.
-
I found a Zoom app for mobile. We'll see how it works out from Masons Cove. ;D
-
I'm interested
-
And a one, and a two (count me in). Will need to look into getting audio into the old laptop, but that should be part of the fun.
-
Jazzy, thanks to your Senior Management for offering use of the Zoom account. I notice you don’t have an email attached to your profile. If you’d rather not have your email publicized, I could have all who want to participate email me and I can then forward you the list so you can send out the invitations with the connection info. Does that work?

Assuming this is going to take place on a weekend, I'm all booked through February. Meetings, meetings, meetings! I'm afraid I'll have to miss out on this one...
-
yep that fine Bill, I have a zoom quizz night with some mates this evening but i am not the host but i will focus on how it all works.
How do you feel about a pre meet zoom chat too with a few others spread around the globe im flexible with time.
-
Works for me. And, given the time difference issue, perhaps it could be scheduled at a time where brother Hieronymous can join us.

Hey guys, it doesn't have to be over Zoom, google meet does the same thing for free, I've had a few meeting over Google and it was great too! Just my 2 cents
-
I understand the free version of Google Meet allows up to 100 participants, but is limited to 1 hour sessions. So you'd need to restart regularly.
-
Oh didn't know that.... thanks
-
Did this ever happen? If not, would love to participate!
-
Not yet but we should get it going.
-
I am interested. Agree with the ‘time slots’ for participants.
My family Zooms every other week... patience is a virtue. And it seems every time I speak, it freezes up and I repeat myself and I repeat myself and I repeat myself....

I repeat myself when I'm distressed I repeat myself when I'm distressed I repeat myself when I'm distressed, I repeat!
A Zoom meeting would be nice! It won't be the Chicago Element gathering in...2021...but close enough. Bill maybe we can get a picture of the Furthers together again.
-
Yeah, sounds like fun. I'll play.
-
Checking and waiting...

Let’s revive this zoom meeting. I can host it from my account.
I am a late owl so could host at a reasonably late time if needed to cater for us time zones but wouldn’t want it to go on for too long. But if you guys & girls can pm me with some days that you could be free then i can set it up and send out the invites. It may end up having to have a number of meetings depending on numbers and availability. If anyone has a desire to demonstrate some specific aspect of their instrument or technique etc. Let me know so i can schedule that and let attendees know in advance. 👍🏾
It’s about time we kicked this idea off and hopefully it can be done a few times a year.
-
I'm in! PM sent.
-
I don’t know how to PM… ::)
Currently am unemployed so any day is ok with me.
-
I can't get the option for emailing to show. There should be an email icon next to my avatar but whenever I modify my profile to make it active and do the update it just unticks it so it does not show. Maybe one of the admin team can check out why this does not hold the update.
-
Jazzy, consider those in Alembic’s home time zone in on this.

I'm seeing the email icon, and clicking it opens the email messaging.
-
hmm, I still don't see the email icon.
This is what I see.
Or am i not supposed to see my own email icon?
Just tried again and after entering my password. When I reopen my profile it is showing as unticked all the time.

Sure thing Bill, tgo it just needs to be a sensible time as I think we are about 8 hrs ahead of you guys so by the time it's midnight here you guys are still most likely working unless you are people of leisure. So whilst it's not really practical for me to stay up till stupid o'clock during the week, sometime over a weekend is easier for most i expect.
Maybe if the alembic zone people can give a suitable time and we can work from there. It would be good to get a good mix of people on here from outside and inside the alembic time zone area. 👍🏾
-
I'm seeing the icons on yours and mine. I've noticed this kind of thing happening before and looked at it. I don't know why it happens. Perhaps try refreshing the thread page and see if it appears.
-
9:00 in the evening in Germany is 12:00 noon in California. Does that sound workable for those interested? (day of week not withstanding)
-
I would be interested, especially of it’s a weekend since we are being pulled back to the office for work next month. I am in the east coast US time zone.
-
I only see the little person with the badge on Jazzyvee’s icon. No mail envelope next to it. Refreshed page and the same.

I'm seeing email icons on every post in this thread. Are there any others missing for you?
-
I see them on everyone except Jazzy.
Bill, tgo
-
Thanks Bill. I tried editing the account, but like Jazzy said, it wouldn't stay checked. I'll pass the issue on and see what we can find.

I see envelopes for everyone except sharkwagon and jazzyvee.
-
See if it shows up for me now
-
For those who can't reach jazzyvee directly, send a message to me (adriaan at alembic dot com) and I will forward them.
-
Thanks Adriaan
-
Jazzy and Bryan; I think I have both accounts working now - the allow email boxes are checked. The icons should be showing now too (let me know if they're not).
If you change your profile again, the problem may reoccur. In the meantime, I'll try to remember what I did, and make some notes.
-
Previously I couldn’t see jazzy or sharkwagon’s envelope icon either, but now I can.
Thanks for keeping things humming along here David!
-
Thanks for letting me know. I hope it sticks.
-
Thanks David, icon see see my email icon.😂
