Title: The Sunshine Makers
Post by: StephenR on November 18, 2020, 10:33:22 AM
Found a reference and link to this animated short earlier. Very cool, the old animation styles were amazing. I saw this once previously at a late 60s Dead Fillmore East  show but had forgotten all about it.

A cartoon espousing that orange sunshine will make everyone happy played at a Dead show at the Fillmore East in the 60's?  How appropriate!  Thanks for posting this, Stephen.

This earlier B&W print actually may have been the one I saw, I don't remember the animation being as colorful as the one I posted earlier, but I also remember little detail of shows from that period. A couple of people's comments on the B&W version mention seeing it at Dead shows in 1969-70. The color version is a lot more impressive but the murky quality of the earlier print adds to the surreal quality and is fitting.

That was fun!
May I also recommend (still available on NetFlix - or maybe Prime - last I checked) another The Sunshine Makers; this one is a 2015 documentary about psychedelic chemists Tim Scully* & Nick Sands.

*Tim (no kin to Rock) was also an early Dead sound crew member.

Excellent suggestion about the Sunshine Makers flick on Netflix, great movie. I found the animated cartoon on another forum in a similarly named thread, when I clicked on it I expected it to be about the movie on Netflix but was pleasantly surprised to find the animation instead, I had completely forgotten about seeing it back in the day.

Another thing occurred to me about the animation. Approximately 1:40 seconds in they show them distilling the sunshine and bottling it. Pretty sure the distillation device would be considered an example of an Alembic.

Reminds me of the old 1930's Max Fleischer version of "Gulliver's Travels".  I'll have to check out the Netflix Flick.

The Sunshine Makers isn't available on Prime or Netflix in the UK :(  I'm still waiting for the most recent laurel Canyon doc do surface over here too.

Graeme

edit - found Laurel Canyon and Echo in the Canyon on UK Prime now so that's my weekend viewing sorted. Just as well as my bit of Scotland has just entered full lockdown again.

We watched The Sunshine Makers documentary about Sands and Scully.  Very well done with a little bit of Owsley in there and even a quick shot of Jerry.   We could have done without the old fat man naked yoga, though.  lol.

Ended up not being able to watch the laurel canyon docs. Prime are charging extra for the privilege so I'll wait till they migrate to to youtube or netflix UK.  :(

Another to try is Magic Trip, the Pranksters movie shot during the Worlds Fair journey.  This was like, before anything happened on the scene, no Grateful Dead or anything.

It was amazing to see the stories I've read in books over the years, recanted by numerous people in different narratives.

This movie proved a lot of to be true.  Anyway, its a good supplement.

On Prime, no charge (as of today)

Thanks for the head’s up on “Magic Trip”, Roger.   I just added it to my Prime watch list.

I second Bill's thanks!  (And his feelings vis a vis FOMNY........)

I saw Echo In The Canyon (or was it Echos?) free; I hate when they start charging for something that was free!

Not to be an overzealous grammatician, but I think the word you want is recounted. Recanted would mean that they were all saying it never happened!

Very correct Edwin and exactly what I meant...recounted  8)  I would have been a bad witness.

If only certain political parties had made the same mistake, ha!

Its been bugging me...for clarity after my mis-used word...seeing the Magic Trip movie validated the stories I've read over the years.  That's clear, thanks all!
