Title: [SOLD] Super clean 1983 Series I Claro Walnut Long Scale
Post by: sonofa_lembic on June 15, 2020, 05:08:06 PM
This just emerged from 25 years of living in a closet.  This two owner bass is in amazing virtually unused condition.  Top and back are claro walnut with a mahogany core.  The ebony fingerboard has no cracks or shrinkage.  The frets are full height and look like new.  The cleanest 37 year old bass you will ever see.  I just set up the bass, and it plays like a dream.  The truss rods have about 1/2 turn of tension on them, and the neck is straight and true.  Comes with the original hardshell case in very good condition, and the original power supply looks like it was made yesterday.  The original cable is working perfectly too.  There are virtually no finish flaws.  Just a pin head sized ding, and a few very minor bumps.  $5,500.00.  I can accept Paypal and will ship to the continental USA.
Email me for info and quality photos.

Sold.....to myself.  I sat down with this bass tonight and played the entire Golden Heart album by Mark Knoffler, and by the end of it, I came to the realization that this bass is virtual perfection.  It sounds incredible all the way up the neck.  The bass felt like it was made especially for me with the perfect neck carve and reach.  It was so comfortable and the weight is so reasonable, it was like coming home.  When a bass can make your eyes well up and start to cry, you know it is THE one.  My apologies for the tease, but I had gotten the bass in today to just flip, but all it took was an hour with some great music to see that if I let go of it, it would have been a huge folly. Registering it with Mica tonight!

Beautiful bass...been there, done that, glad you will be enjoying it!   Been on the other side too, let one go that I hope one day comes back around.  It’s a lot more efficient to hang onto them.   :)

Buying an Alembic instrument can be an emotional trial. At one point I looked for one for 9 plus months before getting one. I bid on one on EBay only to have a well known and respected bass store outbid me in the last 3 seconds, so they could turn around and sell it for more. There are ones on here I wanted that the owners pulled and that was very frustrating.
I came away from all that with two thoughts:
1) if you are selling a bass on here, please respect other forum members and be totally serious
2) if you don't get the bass you want, a better one will come along

Selling can be emotional as well.  I got inquiries right off the bat, but everyone really just wanted to see it.  A new unmolested Series on the market always draws attention, and I am more than happy to share.  Even the fellow who said that he missed this one had said he was going to "think about it", and I did not get the impression he was serious.  That gave me time to "think about it", and instead of giving it away for zero profit, I decided to live with it a while and price it according to its true market value.  Having owned about 90 Alembics over the past 42 years, I know that when you see a good one, you do not ponder it long.  That said, I have no problem selling the bass to any forum members who feel this is the bass for them.  Just make an offer.

Hey BeenDown139, it would really be helpful, particularly in situations like this one, if you added an email link to your forum profile so other members here can easily contact you. The way the server is set up any personal emails sent to another member do not expose the email address. If you get an email from a member they will not see your address unless you decide to respond so your privacy is always protected.

Meanwhile, hoping you still have an opportunity to get this bass now that it once again for sale, based on the pictures in the Reverb listing it looks quite nice indeed.

since this isn't the dudepit and i'm not gonna get in a flame war over this, i'm gonna say my piece and then you can ban me if you want.
as the fellow who was gonna think about it i can tell you that I was ready to pull the trigger when the instrument was withdrawn from sale.  to see it put up on reverb without even a "hey i changed my mind if you're still interested here's your chance before i list it" email is pretty insulting to say the least. so good luck selling it on reverb at your perceived market value. when you don't see an offer come from in from colorado, you'll know it's me.

first it's for sale.  then it's not.  now it is.  who's to say you won't pull this crap on the next interested buyer?

next! 🚽

Colorado?  I think I know you.  If so, this all makes sense.
Aside from this fellow who has made his intent clear, my offer stands to anyone who feels this is the bass for them.  Just contact me, through the Reverb ad and I will sell it to you for a make no money price since I regret if I made anyone feel bad here on the forum.  In the meantime, I am going to enjoy having it around.

Hey BeenDown139: Sorry your initial experience here hasn’t been a good one.

As David (Gtrguy) has suggested, purchasing an Alembic is not always the easiest thing to do. You’re investing a lot money, often need to wait a considerable length of time to find something that you like, and unfortunately people sometimes put things up for sale here and then take them down. As David suggested, however, another Series bass will inevitably come along that has your name written on it and is a better deal than those you have missed (whether it’s $5,500 or $6,495 and people can list their instruments for whatever they desire, those prices are on the high end for a Series I of that age). Unless you’re looking for a pristine collectors item, you can find less expensive options. I have three series basses all of which are that age or newer and didn’t play close to those prices for any of them.

The guys and gals on this forum are good people. They are typically more interested in what they have listed going to someone who will play and enjoy it than squeezing every last dollar out of what they are selling. Typically if something is listed and then withdrawn, the person has decided they just can’t live without the instrument. I’ve made several purchases from forum members and have always felt I got a fair deal or better.

If you provide contact information as suggested by StephenR, people here will take the time to notify you when they see something come up that they know you might like (Two of my Alembics were purchased this way). If you haven’t done it already, post exactly what you’re looking for in the “Wanted” section of the forum. Although I know it’s not easy, your patience will, in the long run, be rewarded.
