55 years ago today, the Warlocks played Magoo's Pizza Parlor, their first gig with their new bass player, one Phillip Chapman Lesh.
And aren't we all glad they did?

Maybe not Dana Morgan, Jr. He should have started a band with he and Pete Best as the rhythm section!

Back in the day, I worked the same circuit as Duke Tumato & the All-Star Frogs; Duke (AKA Bill Fiorio) quit his previous gig to start that band. For my money, the Frogs were by far the better band, and Duke could play circles around his replacement - but he did miss out on the fame & fortune that REO Speedwagon stumbled into. Now all we need is to find the McLean Stevenson of bass players, and we've got a band!

Yep, the guy from M*A*S*H - who quit to become a movie star. And never worked again, while the show got ever more popular.
So - barring further info on keys or second guitar, a Duke/Dana/Pete power trio would work (maybe - I've never heard Dana, but from what I've read, he might not be able to hang in that line-up).
YT is really light on the Frogs, but there's this (far from their best):

Right before that cervical fusion surgery a while back, I bought the box set with all 11 seasons of M*A*S*H plus the original motion picture... y'know, just to help pass the time. I had seen them all at one time or another anyway, but never in any order or with any sense of chronology. It took several months to get through them, (I don't binge-watch anything, not even IDoJ) but I realized McLean Stevenson's character, Lt. Col. Henry Blake, was brilliantly played, and I really missed that comedic timing after they wrote him out of the script. It took the edge offa' some of what I reckon must have been some socially pretty edgy stuff in it's day. Sorry for train-wreckin' your thread. If it makes amends, I'm deeply in Phil-study on my musical path now. Mostly because of you guys!

Interesting/macabre piece of trivia: McLean Stevenson died of a heart attack. The very next day actor Roger Bowen, who had played Col. Henry Blake in the movie, also died of a heart attack!

The ZZ Top doc on...Netflix?...had an interesting mention by Dusty Hill.
In 64/65 he and Frank Beard were in a Texas band named The Warlocks.
Was this the single that Phil Lesh found and could never find again, so they decided to change their name? I though that was a cool connection, if true.
Anyway, great anniversary mention Peter!

Velvet Underground were also Formerly The Warlocks.
For that matter, I suggested it for one my high school bands; I disremember whether that time we ended up being Sweet Leaf, Silver Spoon, Crystal Myth, or The Perverts Of Cram, but I was voted down.
