Title: Shelter From the Storm! (Bay Area on House Arrest!)
Post by: lbpesq on March 16, 2020, 06:16:59 PM
We, along with everyone else in six Bay Area counties, have been ordered to “shelter in place”, starting tonight at midnight and lasting at least until April 7th.  Everyone is supposed to stay at home except for “essential functions” like food shopping or going to the doctor.  All non-essential businesses are ordered closed, though the list of “essential businesses” is fairly large.  Restaurants are closed except for take out orders.  This is getting weird!

They haven’t declared that here yet, But all restaurants, etc. are closed, and today I finished ramping down and closing our facility and everyone is now working remotely for the duration.  It’s a bit surreal. Stay well!

I believe it's coming soon everywhere. I brought the bug-out bag (and a bass!) to work this morning. My office here at the Plant is now stocked with two weeks of rations. They are sending a Nurse to check me out tomorrow. In 30 years on the job, this is the strangest thing I've experienced.

The Banking system went through a "stress test" a few years ago....I consider this a "personal stress test".

Reevaluating my life routine and really......it's not as life-threatening as say a mass earthquake....or power plant meltdown.....

Yup....some service-sector folks will be hit bad.....we need the idea-people to come up with job cross-overs like restaurant folks applying to food distribution chains....Amazon delivery will skyrocket.....

#1 on my personal stress-test......$250,000 down in my IRA...since March 1.....but I know, you don't really lose it until you take it out.....

And as others have said.....plug in that Amp / headphone Amp and start woodshedding.

Listen to the news 90min in the AM and 60min in the PM.....Do Not leave it on all day.....Talking Heads never really help any situation....

Remember the 911 media burnout we all experienced.....

Last Thursday we were all basically told to work from home for the next two weeks (I work in R&D in Pharma).  Within the past two weeks We had one guy come into work after arriving from Northern Italy, someone else come into work feeling sick, getting worse as the day went on, and has since than been confirmed with COVID-19.

Here in PA, everything is shutdown.  eating establishments are take out only for now, liquor stores are shut down, and many other businesses deemed non-essential are as well.

It's extremely surreal and is like living in a movie.

Friday Im scheduled to go to my double bass lesson in NYC also...I'm thinking I might cancel that.

The owner of one our local brewpubs complained about the shut-down order - "The Governor is singling out us and everybody else!"  Fortunately he's better at crafting beer than coherent sentences........

The city council passed a special 90-day law allowing any establishment with a consume-on-premises liquor license to sell package goods to go - so at least you can be both sick and geezed!

And the state is allowing medical dispensaries (but not recreational ones) to leave their controlled access rooms & sell us weed at the curb; just like old times!

I work as a Toolroom Machinist where we make cans.
Today they sent out the most curiously worded ‘waiver’ that I think we are to carry with us if we get to a “lockdown” condition.
Since cans are an integral part of our food supply chain and I am a “can maker” I shall not be impeded by law officers from attending my place of employment.

Not gonna lie, this is rather disturbing and at the same time comical.  Not sure if I should laugh or cry.   Do I reveal the actual truth?  The truth that I am a bass playing shoe maker trapped in a can maker’s world?

I really wanted to work from home, but my wife has COMPLETELY drawn the line about parking my forklift in the living room . . . . . .

I hear ya' Paul... unprecedented strangeness. Our HR Dept. (working remotely from their homes) wrote a 6 page update to the employee handbook just to deal with leave time declared for this, and future emergencies. I had to electronically sign a receipt, acknowledging I had been advised of the policy, and I'm not taking a leave...  ::)

Yesterday, they sent a nurse to check on my status, basically just to verify I am asymptomatic and fit to work some pretty long hours if it becomes necessary. Trying to make light of one more in a week full of increasingly ominous/serious moments, I told her that on several occasions I had tested positive for DUMASS-18. I thought she was going to hit me with something. I reckon her life is pretty strange right now too.

Well the story is...
When we bought the farm in the Northwoods of Wisconsin I needed an income and found employment at Weinbrenner Boots.  Was doing digitizing and CAD manipulation of shoe/ boot components and setting up programs for a CNC material cutter... LOVED the job, wore headphones all day listening to whatever satiated me and did anal retentive work.

Sadly the pay was not sustainable, ended up back in Milwaukee (still have the farm property and going crazy trying to keep the place functional) working as a Machinist...  I have no technical training but did spend 12 years in the Toolroom previously doing tooling inspection and AutoCAD work.  So I was familiar with machining disciplines.  Now I run three different engine lathes a couple milling machines, surface grinders, a CNC 3-axis machine and rebuild various components with crazy tight tolerances into 4 decimal places but still at heart am a shoemaker!  It also is comic relief as years ago one of the very competent Machinist who was also a Tool and Die Maker would call any half-arsed work as being ‘shoemakers work - cobbled together’.   We do have a radio/cd player in the rebuild area but there are days when I don’t have the joy of music to help me along.

The bass player is kinda tongue in cheek as I really haven’t made the time to play since we bought the farm 4 some years ago as there is ALWAYS something to do...  but I still remember way back when I was a Journeyman Bookbinder and my Mom told me that some of her friends asked :
“What does Paul do?”  (all my siblings were educated well off professionals)
My Mom replied:
“He’s a musician, plays bass in several bands.”
That is one of the reasons my Mom is so loved!

Well, it's here.

Music City U S A  is now under a mandatory 'shelter at home' order.  I'm on hiatus from work for the next two weeks . . . . . as far as we know today.  After that, who knows ?

Mizz Wilson and I got out yesterday to shore up the pantry (grocery stores were mostly OK) and rode around a bit.  Hadn't seen the tornado damage (I grew up around hurricanes, she'd never seen anything like the shredded real estate we saw), and it was somehow smaller but worse than I imagined.  A one- or two-block wide path, everything on either side barely disturbed.  They always do the strangest things.

Went downtown, and those scores of clubs and restuarants were shuttered.  The big convention center and surrounding big hotels (Omni, W, and JW Marriott and smaller designer hotels) all closed save for the few handfuls of souls awaiting their flights.  Opryland Resort, the Opry Mills Mall, and the Opry House closed.

We are well, have few exposure opportunities, and with my schedule, time at home with her is a wonderful thing.  I really think this will give me time to rest up, take a new start at several things that got sidetracked personally, and I hope to channel that as a buttress against the worry of all this.

My best to you all,

J o e y

Plus, I can woodshed some old tunes I never got quite right.  I find sometimes that a different artist's take on a well-known tune can give me a little insight I had not considered before.  Like this, for instance:

Checking in from Roanoke, VA.

Not locked down here yet, but the City staged street closing barricades at the corner adjacent to the Water Treatment Plant yesterday. (the Hospital is on this same block) Which indicates to me that action can't be far along. So far our staff remains healthy. Governor signed an EO yesterday closing schools for the rest of the year, and all recreational gatherings in the interim, all non-essential service/entertainment businesses are now closed. If I'm reading it correctly, 30 days.

Sharp eye, Bill... the new card might be in the inter-office mail system. We did the refresher course a while back. We were trying to get our respirator safety training and fit-testing done when the isolation protocols went into effect. Who knows when that'll happen now.

But yeah, I've never had anybody actually check my permit.  ;D

Just another bay area local checking in.
Like Greg, I work in water, but BOTH  kinds ( our district is water/ wastewater/recycled) so we are working. However, being in the Engineering Department, we can work from home, and effective today, I'm 55 years old, and will get my full pension of 30 years, so ( planned well before the world went crazy) I'm retiring next week! Not going to be taking any trips but will get quality time with the Alembics

Congrats, Ken!  Retirement is the best; I wish I'd done it 30 years earlier.

My biggest problem right now is the library is closed!!  Just started a revisit of Urusla K. LeGuin's Earthsea trilogy (I think I was in high school the last time I read it); after I guess I'll be up in the attic going the boxes of stuff that I don't have room on my bookshelves for (hmmm - wonder if I still have The Stand...............)

Ken I am very happy for you and rather green with envy... good one on ya!

Peter - LeGuin is one of my favorite writers she reached a level that was transformative for me.  My introduction to her was during high school, my brother and I finished some "recreational activity" and went inside to find The Lathe of Heaven was on TV!  Immediately after went to the library and got the book.  Earthsea is epic.

In the club before me, Ken?   Heck I’m a newcomer compared to some other regulars.  This is just a great place to hang out, so many of us never leave.  Retiring?  Congrats.   I don’t think I’ll ever be able to retire but, to be honest, after staying at home for most of the last 1.5 weeks, I think retirement would drive me nuts!

Foundation is 3 books from Earthsea on my shelf - but I'll probably go to the end of the shelf and give The Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings yet another go before I turn to Isaac.

And if this really stretches out, there's always my great-grandfather's Harvard Classics (also known as the Harvard 5-Foot Shelf; 50 volumes of, well, classics, closely related to Hutchins & Adler's Great Books).  I've been to get to those since I was a teen - even before I went to a Great Books-based college.

I'll have to check out Earthsea sometime but I already have about 40 books in the hopper to read; just finished Agency by William Gibson, part of a trilogy with The Peripheral...excellent books and I can't wait for the third book to be released; he lives here in Vancouver and if he doesn't hurry up I'll protest at his house and make him feel uncomfortable or something.

haven't read Foundation in some time but I liked it and always remembered 'violence is the last resort of the incompetent'...Tony

One thing I added to the bugout bag, for in case I get locked in here at work - a couple good books that were Christmas gifts from [victoriaofderby]... I never seem to find time to read them when I'm at home, or when I do, this weird thing happens where I start uncontrollably falling asleep.  ::)  On our daily tag-up text yesterday, she was reading some Tolkien thing... that girl is weirder than me!  ;D

My county's stay at home order goes into effect at 5PM today. A couple of other towns and counties that make up our metro area have also put them in place. My guess is it won't be long before the Governor locks down the state. It won't affect my wife going out as she has to go to work each day for equipment checks required by the health code. The local law enforcement agencies involved said while they don't intend to give out citations or make arrests but that will use stops for aggressive teaching of offenders whatever that means.

One of the county rules is no groups or gatherings of people except immediate family. It's a sure sign the Northerners have taken over as every Southerner knows immediate family includes grandparents, aunts & uncles and cousins out 3rd once removed. If you add it all up that can easily break 100 people, 200 if you're married.   ;D

On another note the wife found out yesterday that hourly employees who work for Child Nutrition won't be paid for the shutdown unless they have sick time they can use. She let her employees know this yesterday and she is holding a meeting with them today to go over it all. For some reason I don't think she is going to be in a good mood when she gets home after the folks beat her up about no pay for two months. Especially when they find out other school employees will. The problem goes back to Jim Crow where the state made a law that school systems cannot support child nutrition programs and if they have them they must be self supporting. The result is the school districts created wholly owned non-profits to run the food programs. If there is no money coming in there is none to go out.

We go on lock down tonight at 11:59 pm here in MN, but for only two weeks (as if that's going to improve things). We have essentially already done two weeks as the Univ. of MN went to distance learning right after spring break and they've locked us out of our buildings.

Crazy times....I'm now feeling something is missing if I don't have a headset on and I've got my spouse texting me things even though the rooms we are using as offices sit right next to each other.

Interesting how people are looking at the "shelter at home order" differently. We've got a good percentage of the populace cleaning out grocery stores this AM, while my undergraduate students are planning one more night of partying at each others apartments (they are keeping liquor stores open as "essential businesses" so I'm not very optimistic that the partying is going to stop any time soon).

Stay safe and if you've got an Alembic you've got all the company you need. I'm thankful that I'm now to the point where I can almost play a different Alembic each day of the week.

Now I'm on to rereading Elijah Wald's Escaping The Delta: Robert Johnson & The Invention Of The Blues, to be followed with a revisit of his How The Beatles Destroyed Rock'N'Roll: An Alternative History Of American Popular Music.  If you haven't read (and do have access to) them, both are (on the off chance anyone reading this is interested in music) highly recommended!

So how far are the areas in which people live coming out of hibernation at this point?

Here in Minnesota some additional businesses beyond the essential ones have been given the okay to open to the public though most smaller shops are still closed.  The home builder where my son works as a finish carpenter called its workers back, but some refused to return. My wife's employer (a major airline where she is an IT manager) took the federal aid offered but has reduced everyone to 75% time (not the amount of work they do but what they get paid).  She's working from home. At the University where I am employed we are forbidden from accessing our campus offices and will definitely only be teaching online this summer.  We have been told we need to prepare to teach online through the fall semester though a decision wont be made on that for awhile.  As far as the research I do, which is primarily with people with disabilities, its been stopped dead in its tracks since later February/Early March. And for good reason...one of senior care facilities with whom we were working lost 47 residents to Covid-19 deaths over a two-week period in April.

At this point I'm feeling pretty fortunate to live in a suburban/rural area where social distancing is not a problem and I'm probably more likely to get bitten by a deer tick than catch this virus.  I empathize with family members living in more urban surroundings especially some young nieces and nephews living with groups of friends in large cities (Philly, Boston, Chicago) some of whom appear to be taking the pandemic far to lightly.

And of course I especially feel for those of you who are awaiting delivery of new Alembics and need to wait a bit longer  :-\

In the pacific NW, in a small town across the water from Seattle...
I'm happy to have curbside pickup at home depot, they just toss it in your trunk and
I drive away. They were counting heads as they entered the store, but not as many
masks as I'd expect. Sigh. Our numbers are very low around here, I hope that reflects reality.

Here in Southwest Virginia, we have been spared the worst-case scenario. The only outbreaks of any size happened in two local nursing homes, and sadly resulted in some fatalities. Other cases have been fewer and further between, but there have been some. Roanoke is a city of about 100,000, surrounded by a cluster of smaller townships, altogether population totaling maybe 150,000, but you can drive 10 minutes from the metro limits and be out 'in the country' where I live... 105% rural. (think; farm-use plates on a Camaro) We're just not that close to each other anyway, so we had that going for us. Because I am the Operator for a Water Plant in another small township in a neighboring county, they put me on the COVID-19 Task Force email list, so I get the daily briefings and updates. It's really nice getting the unfiltered info first thing every morning. One thing I particularly enjoy - the Town Manager ends every email asking his Staff in red bold font to please use this information to help him control rumors and inform the public, all 655 of them.

We've entered phase one of reopening. Phase one allows reopening of parks (no camping or playgrounds though), previously nonessential businesses with restrictions, child care facilities with restrictions and day camps with restrictions. Restaurants are still on take out only. Still no gatherings over ten people and places like bars, movie theatres, concert venues, etc remain closed.

My neighborhood was rural but is now the transition point as the town has expanded with new neighborhoods forming our northern border. With the new subdivisions nearby even though they can go back to work it has been very quiet. This leads me to believe a lot of workers have decided to wait it out longer or the builders are restricting the number of crews onsite. I also suspect that many of the "nonessential" stores if they reopen won't see much business as most people are still staying home. I suspect it will stay this way with schools closed for the year and the kids at home with the parents.

My wife works in the schools system at a year round school. As far as to when school will start back up no one is sure. The School Board is trying to reopen traditional calendar schools on Aug. 17th. For year round schools they are still struggling with when to reopen. There is some discussion of using the normal start of the year round calendar in July. Regardless of calendar used the school system has said they doubt all students will be allowed to be in school at the same time do to social distancing needs. One proposal that seems to be getting traction is having half attend in class Monday/Wednesday and the other half Tuesday/Thursday with remote learning for the days they are not in class. The other serious proposal is to go with AM/PM classes. I think this one is better particularly for the younger children as I think they will learn better in class.

One thing though, given all the with practice social distancing  why do the other drivers insist on inspecting my tailpipe?

Your school situation appears similar to what they are discussing here in MN. Staggered days or AM PM cohorts. Neither is perfect but friends of mine who teach kids with disabilities indicate that not much is going on a home. Additionally some of those who teach in our urban schools are indicating that while engaged students are learning just as much as before, those who were not into school prior to Covid have just disappeared.

It's very interesting to ride around Nashville if you know where to look.

The coach companies have so many tour buses in drydock they're going to have to start parking them in farm fields.  The touring sound contractors have got Meyers and Midas stacked floor to ceiling, nothing but nothing is out on the road.  The 18-wheelers they used to ride in are hauling produce from Florida.  The music stores are just beginning to open this week.  Recording studios are dark except for home installations.  It's just eerie.  All the touring artists from golden oldies to Taylor Swift and Brad Paisley are playing at home.  I'm waiting to hear about artist managers, vocal coaches, stylists, music biz attorneys, and promoters jumping out of windows or having their Porsches repo'd.  Gibson idled.  Artist Relations outposts closed.

No live music (no bars either) for a while yet.  This week you CAN go to Waffle House or Cracker Barrel at 50% capacity, and I'm trying to figure out how to eat with my mask on.

I've never seen anything like this.

I've received the stimulus money, my unemployment (with the kick-in from the Feds) is rolling every week.  We're fine, my bills are all current, I can't get anything else in my freezer, my cupboards are full, and I am blessed WAY past anything I deserve.  Cooking a lot, I'm telling myself this is dress rehearsal for retirement next year . . . .

Hope you're all well, and my best to you all !

Joey

If you have ever hankered to watch Phil play his Alembic bass and sing with a face mask on here is your chance. Okay now they have no sound, appears they are not playing at the same location and have no idea what is going on. Maybe they need someone else to make it "just about exactly perfect".

I bought that Summers/Fripp album on vinyl the day it came out. Cool stuff, but I wished they had brought in a drummer.

We've been making our way back through the PBS Ken Burns Jazz series.  Wonderfully made history of the music and the culture within which it arose.

Nice emoji, Greg.

David, the Burns jazz documentary is great.  I bought the soundtrack box set when it came out, I’ll have to find that!

It’s now been three months since I was last at my office at the University of Minnesota or had any in personal contact with colleagues or students. I’m getting ready starting next week to teach two summers courses...once again online. Quite a different vibe than live instruction and discussion. The good news is that the University is planning on in-person instruction being started again this fall.

It was pointed out to me on Friday morning when I rode my trainer due to rain, just how long this quarantine has lasted as I had my first flat tire while riding in a stationary position. Apparently three months on a roller even with a relatively new tire was sufficient to wear a section of it down so much that the inner tube was partially exposed, overheated and went BANG!

This kinda goes to the "mental health" aspect of this pandemic. I have a lot of single friends and older friends (hovering around 80 yo) that I maintain contact with either by phone or text messaging. All was going well this summer. Lots of interactions and laughing. A few grumblings from the "old white guys" who watch too much TV and fall for Every Culture War tirade. Anyway, contact is contact.
The Wildfires hit on Labor Day....add to Social Distancing Restriction indoors due to poor air quality. Also my peeps down south started storm watch. Contact came to an abrupt halt. I felt it too as I coughed about the house for two weeks. Having a hard time contacting folks now trying to reestablish a connection.
Is anyone else experiencing this too? Could it be:
Fall approaching and the weather will deteriorate?
Election approaching and the stresses of media deluge?
The gradual realization that nothing will "change" until a vaccine is widely circulated?....like, 8 more months of this stuff.

Another thing I have noticed. Married folks and people who cohabitate have someone to talk to and that's helpful for the most part. But most forget about their single friends / family living alone. At least that's been my experience with my married friends. Just a simple text or funny GIF is all that's needed.

My mother will celebrate 85 years this Wednesday and her Retirement Community is still in lockdown. A card and some flowers will have to do. I cannot talk to her by phone as her hearing aids are not compatible with the telephone. (her perception) We email weekly but I haven't seen her since July 4th. Birthdays are important in our family as we all gather to celebrate with a meal and a lopsided cake. (an inadvertent tradition) Last time we gathered was my birthday in March.

Anyway, onward.....always trying to make the best of situations I have no control over. Give a thought today to a friend / family member living alone and reach out. You Both will benefit.

Much as I hate to be a downer, I have to say - just because we want & need a vaccine doesn't mean we'll get one; witness AIDS & the array of virii responsible for "the common cold".  More likely that they'll find something to make it possible to have it without greatly increasing mortality (again, a la AIDS)

You think?  Common plague-time exchange between Her & me -  H: "Don't you want to talk to me"?  M:  "Sure - but we've been sitting here together for months; you everything I know.  What is there new to talk about?"

The last few years, my weekly conversations with my mother usually started with her saying "Wait a minute; I have to take out my hearing aid so I can hear you."

Gary - you are not alone.
Hibernation season is coming and I feel it in my bones including my emotional bone.  Kinda blue, kinda quiet, feel a deep desire to sleep more.

Plus no hope for us with a clown who is SO wrapped up in his ego that he is blatantly behaving blasphemously towards the Notorious RBG.  He just wants attention at any cost.  Why would anyone act like that?   Yeah - and the spin city of our media with both political sides ramping up is nauseating - huge f'n bummer there.

Not sure where to turn, been reaching out to family to try to keep things on the up and up but it does feel like it is getting harder.

I do keep questing for nature to ground me.  She has a way of putting life into perspective.

Paul (my wife has been threatening to whoop me in cribbage - most likely will happen this coming weekend)

Apologies - that was me.  I have big respect for all members here and do not wish to alienate anyone as we share the bond that is beholden in the form of beautiful wood and electronic gadgetry packaged together in an amalgam of intensity both visually and sonically that allows us to express our true feelings so much better than the written (typed) word ever could...
