$8000 for a D'Angelico??? That's about 25% what they go for without the celebrity-memorabilia aspect.

I have no explanation for the D'Angelico price. The Gilchrist right next to it is oddly lower than I'd have thought too.
I didn't see the wood stand Dave, but I know there's a guy down your way who makes some pretty nice ones. *I did spot it... Lot 330. That is kinda' cool.
*It's entirely possible I'm misremembering this, or I dreamed it or something... but was there ever a Grateful Dead television show? Like a Saturday morning cartoon? In my mind, it the art was like Scooby-doo era. Think; late 1970's early 1980's. I'd have been 10-12.

There were Grateful Dead comic books but I don't remember there ever being a kids cartoon.
D'Angelico guitar is also an auction item, I imagine those are either starting bids or what it is expected to sell for. A lot of times auction items owned by celebrities command a much higher price than expected, a low starting bid may be an incentive to overbid. I don't think this is one of the high end D'Angelico archtop boxes and that may be reflected in the price but if someone threw down big bucks for Jerry's old toilet you never know... There are some hefty auction fees, too, but they go easier on you if you can afford to spend over four million on an item :) .
27.5% on the first $3,000 of the hammer price;
25% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of $3,000 up to and including $400,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of $400,000 up to and including $4,000,000;
and 13.9% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of $4,000,000
I grew up near where D'Angelico's apprentice Jimmy D'Aquisto had his shop. A friend used to hang there and help him clean up, pack string orders etc, I would go occasionally to hang out and watch Jimmy work. In around 1972-73 Jimmy finished a guitar but the person who ordered it decided to pass. I was offered the guitar for $1,000 which was at that point in my life an astronomical sum to pay for an instrument. I sure wish I had been able to take advantage of the offer.

The description says that it's a D'Angelico "style" guitar...not an actual D'Angelico.

Check again, Doc; it says it's a "D'Angelico Style A", and the pix clearly show the D'Angelico logo. Style A is the model; IIRC it debuted before the better-known Excel & New Yorker models.

Pretty good, Gregory. I have most of the parts assembled and I’ve “reliced” the brass parts in vinegar. I had to do a little fabrication on the Footman Loop, and I have now entered the world of routing as I had to rout an extension to the jack hole. I’ll need to stop off at Alembic for a couple of small parts that my bridge needs. I also need to wind the pickups. In the meantime, I’m waiting for some dry weather to spray more coats of rattle can nitro aged clear finish (senior management insists I spray outdoors). I’m hoping this will be enough to get the right color, but I may have to do a coat or two of amber. I’m also waiting on a faux alligator guitar case - what else could be more appropriate? This is proving to be a fun project. And, when all is said and done, I believe I’ll be able to bring it in at a significant savings off the Bonham auction price!

Might I suggest a respirator, as well? Not a mask, a respirator - I've heard it rumored those fumes can be a tad nasty ("Known by the State of California..." and so on).

Yeah... I pitched a what became a famous hissy-fit one time after some summertime humidity clouded up a really nice sunburst I was working on for one of Dad's banjos. No amount of thinner wash coats or retarder would release that milky white. Had to start over from scratch. >:( Had Mom not been around, a big long string of swear-words mighta' happened.
