The bridge.

Oh!!
-
Too many knobs ...
-
One pickup with 6 pots? (Black knobs appear to be stepped.) Makes you wonder what's going on here.

Update says it SOLD for $1300... I didn't see that coming. Could be some sadness here when the new custodian realizes the modifications. Or it be the beginning of a longstanding relationship. :)

Hmmm... back on the block. ???

The Traveling Excel re-surfaces, this time in Indiana. We get a look and a description of the electronics this time. No Alembic stuff in there. https://www.ebay.com/itm/333602855255
(but a tiny voice cries out... fix me... fix me...)

At least they changed the brown knobs to black. In the recent listing I’m more impressed by Geddy Lee’s Book of Bass laying behind the item for sale than by the bass itself.
-
First they describe it as having a mid sweep preamp, then they say it has bass, mid hi, mid low, and treble. I'm thinking they don't understand how a sweep-able mid control works? Pretty nice price. Easy to drop in a proper pre from Alembic, though it may sound great already.
-
Is it the same bass? The bridge is back to normal.
-
Same bass. The bridge was swapped to install a piezoelectric element, which was later removed and the original reinstalled and the screw holes plugged. (it hurt me to type that)

Interesting the quote that the electronics are better than the alembic preamp system. Whether it is or not a buyer would be getting an alembic body without the electronics which allow us to access the soul of our basses.

I was wondering what was going on there...

The Traveler has returned. In California now... I think she's trying to get home. ;D
Sold on TalkBass last week- https://www.talkbass.com/threads/alembic-excel-1998-4-string.1493059/

In a little over a year this bass has appreciated from the original asking price of $1,300 (Oct. 2019) by approximately $700 (and $600 in a blink of an eye) with little to no "restoration" beyond a change from some brown to black knobs. If it sells, that's a nice return on one's investment or some very expensive knobs.

She's back on the Eastern shore now... the Traveling Excel leaves California and lands in Massachusetts. :)
