I used 'em for years, getting them from "HQ" (as Jazzy says!), but switched to Chromes on my 5-er after realizing that flats are mighty good at reducing finger noise.  YMMV, of course.  As long as you change them occasionally, they're still almost as bright as the Alembics.

I tried them on my '81 Distillate, Rob... sounded fine, and the windings were nice and uniform but I found the tension a little bit stiff for my liking.

If you'd like to test-drive a set, I'll be glad to send them up to you... they are practically new, already cut for a medium-scale Alembic. I think I played maybe one gig with them before switching to T-I Jazz Rounds.

I use Alembic strings on my fretted 5 String series I and my 5 string MK Deluxe. Great punch and the low B string can really shake things up.

Thanks for the replies.  The reason I asked is that I have two new sets unused (one set in the package and one set came off of a long scale bass new and unused).  I prefer flat wounds, so if any one who will use them on their basses would like them I will send them to you.  Jazzyvee has first dibs since he replied first, but let me know if anyone is interested.  -Rob

I have Alembic strings on my '96 Epic 4. They were on it when I bought it and I'm pretty sure they're the original set. They play very well and are still very bright. That said, I preferred flats on my other bass and am thinking about putting on TI Jazz Flats.

OK, Jazzyvee claimed the Alembic strings.

I'm pretty much a 90% flats player too, but I really like keeping at least one of my basses set up with roundwounds... turns out that older walnut Distillate is just perfect for that application. Of course, that bass sounds just great with any strings.  :)
