It'd almost be worth the $1000 to CSI this one. I think the headstock hole corresponds to the brass plate thingy on the front face of it, but I still got nuthin' for why... scarf joint reinforcement, reimagined? Hard to say. The pickguard screwholes irritate me more... I guess because there's more of 'em, and they'll be harder to hide.

*for the record, I was looking for the stolen zebrawood Distillate... when this poor thing popped up. ;D

I'm guessing the hole in the back corresponds to the strap button by the tailpiece; why the they decided the latter worked & the former had to go, I'm clueless (well, OK, if I were to be unkind, I'd perhaps suggest that I am not, in fact, the clueless one in this equation.....)

And I fear to imagine what the faux TRC hides; given the overall state of the instrument, mayhap someone decided it needed a set-up and went excavating for the adjustment nut?

Peter (who will gladly let Greg drop the coin to find out.........)

I saw this one this morning as well on eBay . I see many " RED FLAGS " on this one . The RED FLAG  that I find concerning to a large extent is that thing over the string nut . What is the function of that ? The seller should be willing to disclose what that is in all fairness  . Perhaps I shall inquire.  I shall be watching closely for description updates as well :)

Somebody buy it and sell me the Musicman pickup for a reasonable cost. I need one for a project I am working on.

I'm thinking about making an offer... this one needs to be saved, and I believe there is enough here to save. The woodwork required is within my means, and the electronics look to be intact other than the missing bridge AXY. Like I really need another project right now!  ::)  Still... a birdseye maple Distillate-in-distress... c'mon, I gotta' try to save it!  ;D

I have made several attempts to contact the seller visa the eBay message system and it will not let me send the seller a message without me making an offer this time . This has never happened before . I would like to gain disclosure of what the strange cover over the string nut is hiding . Has anyone else made any contact attempts ? Let's find out what that cover is hiding :)

I think you have to click 'Contact seller' , then check the 'other' box under "select a topic".
That will bring you to a text box you can ask specific questions in.

Hope that helps,

I have done this many times before with other potential  transactions . This time it is forcing me to make an offer in the process . It appears that the ebay system is trying to block me from a potential transaction outside of eBay . I was not attempting that at all .

Gotcha,
Ebay sure has an increasing amount of loops we have to jump through.

Elwoodblue. indeed . Perhaps they are doing this in my case because I have included my phone number at other times with other sellers .

That is quite painful to look at and probably justifiably classed GBH or alembic bass abuse.

Well, I put an offer on this one earlier, but someone else bought it at a reported price of $1100. Hopefully they plan to fix it up... it'll be a big job to put that poor thing back right, but I see a lot of potential there.

It would have been in good company with ol' #32, Wolf. ;D

Probably just as well they didn't accept my offer anyway, as I really do have enough projects going for other folks. Eventually Mica will have me ready to get cracking on my own East-Meets-West Starfire project. Still, I would love to have brought that one back. I had fun just thinking about how I'd do it... solving little wooden puzzles made for a fun day.

I am still so curious as to what kind of  atrocity may have been lurking behind that cover over the string nut !
I would not have made an offer until that was uncovered and openly disclosed for the world to see .  ;)

Agreed, that little brass doo-hickey behind the nut was the biggest risk. It's hard to say without pulling it offa' there what the jam-sammich lay under, and no guarantee you'll be any better informed once you do, just based on the assumption that anyone who would screw a pickguard to an Alembic can't be trusted to make many good choices. The other side of that coin is, there can't be much under there that couldn't be undone. Even if it involved the end of the truss rods, the fingerboard is totally dorked anyway, so it was coming off, and I was going to be likely adding a front and back laminate to the headstock anyway. (to help Mica unsee that hole!)

Like I said, it was a big job to put it right, and I adjusted my offer accordingly. For $1100, I'm happy to watch from the sidelines and cheer. :)
