Title: Veterans Day
Post by: mica on November 12, 2018, 04:42:32 PM
I know many here at the Alembic Club are veterans, and I thank you for your service to our nation.

In case you didn't know, my dad is also a veteran. He was drafted during Vietnam and served as a radio operator at Fort Sill, OK. He said there was a congressman from Oklahoma at the time named Wickersham so it was a good name to have  :)
I posted this on our Facebook and Instagram today as well:
Thankful to my father who served in the army during Vietnam. This picture was taken when he was a MARS radio operator at Fort Sill, Oklahoma on the occasion of an award of merit for relaying messages to Anchorage Alaska after the the 9.2 magnitude earthquake in 1964. Telephone and telegraph service was knocked out and the military was integral to the recovery. MARS was authorized to handle official Red Cross communications. Ron could type as fast as the telex would allow and relayed more messages than anyone. He’s still the fastest typist here!

This picture is the non-cropped version:

Thanks to Ron, my late Dad (WWII), and all who have served.

I am also compelled to apologize on behalf of my country to all those who's life and limb we have placed in jeopardy unnecessarily, or for less than adequate reason.

And also to apologize to those who served and returned damaged, only to receive little assistance from the powers that be, or have been.

Love the 3-in-1 oil.   Some things don't change!

Bill, (taking a knee)  tgo

Great pic of your dad, Mica!  My dear friend Mick Scott (neé Herbert Scarpelli), whom I eulogized here last February, was a Navy Radioman on Kodiak during that quake; maybe they communicated.  Mick, a fine guitarist & one of the original '65-'67 era Deadheads, would have gotten a kick out of the possibility.

And as a side note, I'm feeling it a little that WWI (never forget, it was originally Armistice Day, to remind us to never do something that stupid again) ended 100 years ago - and I knew vets from that war.  It was more recent when I was born than the founding of Alembic is to now.
So a nod to my Great-Uncle Clyde (an infantryman who was gassed, and thus disabled for the rest of his life), my Great-Uncle Jess (who was a teamster, and wounded just outside combat - by being kicked by a mule), and my friend Vic (who was a pilot in the Lafayette Escadrelle - and, amazingly, came through unscathed).

Peter (who echoes Bill's sentiments)

What a great picture of Ron and interesting slice of history. My wife and I consider Alaska to be our second home. It is so cool that Ron had a role in the state's history.

Can't put it any more succinctly than Bill did...Thanks to Ron, my late dad, and all the vets who have served, or continue to serve, our country!

By the way, Senior Management looked at the picture and said "if you imagine a long hair wig, Ron looks just like Mica!"

Did not know the founder is a fellow Veteran.  Proud to have served and proud to be an Alembic lover.
