anyone have one they swear by? I had the mxr and it didn't play very nice. I got the source audio soundblox envelope filter and works great but the volume loss is too much to handle
so any suggestions?

I highly recommend the tech 21 bass boost chorus. Easy to use, single or multiple chorus and sounds great.

interesting but not an envelope filter. not interested in adding another boost pedal id rather have a better envelope filter

That's a tough one. I've got a 3Leaf GR-2 that works pretty well but can be kind of finicky - you can hear it here with my Stanley Clarke: https://soundcloud.com/hieronymous-seven/signature-squared (https://soundcloud.com/hieronymous-seven/signature-squared) - I can't say I recommend it whole-heartedly.
I also tried my Moogerfooger MF-101 with my Stanley, but didn't like it. It isn't true bypass, the gain knob affects the sound when the effect is switched on or off, when I had a good sound with the filter on, I didn't like the sound with it off.
That's too bad to hear about the Source Audio volume drop.

I use an old 1970's vintage MXR envelope filter just fine. They are sensitive to input level so need to be in the effects chain before any effects that affect volume. With the ability to set the output level on an Alembic I could see where you might need to adjust it to play well with an envelope filter. Another one to try would be the Mutron III. I don't know how the re-issues compare to the vintage but reviews are generally pretty good.

Mike Beigel, the designer of the Mutron III recently came out wirth the Micro Tron III. I grabbed one of the first run. I love it! I believe he just did a new run of these. The newer Mutron III, made by Haz Labs, does not garner the same admiration as the original. For less money, my favorite is the EHX Micro Q-Tron (also designed by Mike Beigel). Of course, I'm using this for guitar - don't know how it translates to bass.

I have been using an Emma Discombobulator (first gen) for some while and like what it does. Admittedly, I don't use it that much but when I do I am pleased with the results.

I've been a fan of the Digitech Bass Synth Wah for years. I bought a spare when I discovered they were discontinued. Sounds good and has a blend knob, so you don't lose too much low end. There may or may not be better "boutique" pedals out there, but for as often as I use that effect (not very, but still a must for me) it's fine. It also has a good octaver mode, along with some wild synth effects. As far as true bypass, I really don't care about that and honestly prefer FET switching as it tends to be more durable over time.

Hey, I had MXR, Qtron, 3Leaf Wonderlove, EBS, even have Future Impact that I use but not for envelope... the best out there for me is Moog Mf-101.
Also I can suggest Iron Ether Xerograph Deluxe, great envelope. Plus both IE and Moog can also be used as low pass filter.
Just had a clinic with my buddy about pedals, and have to say Alembic is so good with pedals, even better then P passive basses.

I'm glad you have a positive experience with the MF-101 - I actually love mine, I have used it as a low-pass filter during recording for several uses, it just didn't play well with my current rig as an effects pedal.

Mike Beigel is always out of stock. It's almost as if he just doesn't want to sell that many. I visit his site regularly.

One of my favorite filters is the one I programmed into my Lexicon MPX G2. It was perfectly squishy and gargle, although it took a lot of tweaking to get it there. It works really well with the pitch shifter set at an octave down. I have one that I programmed into an Fractal FX8. Too bad the pitch shifter is so terrible.

I use a Boss T-Wah from the 80s for guitar, and now and then bass, it works well for me.

Is the Wonderlove that different? The only other 3Leaf pedal I've played is the Proton, and that was only once.
I can't really get rid of my GR-2 - Bootsy signed it and personalized it, so it's staying with me - I really need to use it more with the band. It's pretty subtle (or at least it is the way I use it) - which isn't necessarily a bad thing...
