Title: [RETRACTED] FT: Series I 5-string for Series 5-string with tighter spacing
Post by: Pindy on August 29, 2018, 11:28:03 PM

This is a serious long shot, but if anyone wanted to trade for what I'm asking, this would be the place:

I love my 1993 Series I, with updated RF-canceling pickups and side LEDs. Flame maple. The only thing I wish it had was tighter string spacing, like Jimmy Johnson's 5-in-the-space-of-4 kind of thing. I'm hoping somebody has a Series I/II 5-string with very tight spacing who wants more room. Must be similarly long-scale!

Here are the dimensions:

At the nut, from the bottom to top string is 35mm, or 1 3/8 inches.

At the bridge, the spacing is 65mm total, or 2 9/16 inches. The spacing goes from 16mm between G/B to 17mm between E/B. That's measured string core to core.

Hey Dan,
I own one of the early Series I five-strings, built in 1978. Mine is medium scale so not within the parameters of your trade requirements. But, I did measure the width of the neck at the nut and 24th frets to give you a sense of the neck width of the early five-strings in case anybody offers you a trade for one of the older basses. Width at the nut is 1 7/8" (43mm) and width at the 24th fret is 2 1/4" (53mm). I am not sure if Jimmy's basses have the same width but as you can see the width of mine at the nut is wider than the one you currently own, there is barely any taper up the neck. This was my first five-string and when I got it 33 years ago I had no idea about neck dimensions for five-strings since they were still rare to find at the time and I had never played one. Over the years I have grown to like wider necks on my basses. It would make it harder for you to do a trade but if it were me I don't think I would trade instruments without the ability for both parties to play and compare each instrument.

Good luck with the trade!

I don't know how to RETRACT this ad, suffice it to say I've had a total change of heart about this bass. As much as I like the tighter spacing idea, I have made a lot of peace with this bass recently, and come to accept it for who it is!

I taught myself how to do setups and have solved my playability-vs-clack problems which made me love the instrument all the more. Since it remains my only 5-string fretted bass (I've rediscovered the joy of four strings—who woulda thunk of it) I think 16.5mm is a good width to allow me to jump around between basses without culture shock. Furthermore, I've rarely seen another Series bass with flame maple top and bottom, so it is a fairly unique beast. It already having a 7-piece purpleheart-laminated neck and having had installed my "Christmas-signature" red and green LEDs, as well as Ron's RF-resistant pickups, I think the move is to upgrade to Series II electronics and make it a "real" Series II, play the living **** out of it and pass it down to my bass-playing progeny.
