I wonder how quiet it is without the hum cancelling system.

I remember the time frame when Alembic left the 60 Brady St in San Francisco location and "Stars Guitars" moved in their folks , some of whom some I still remember by name. I remember seeing all kinds of modifications of various descriptions in progress and displayed there . This might be one of those perhaps .
In fact I remember purchasing a single such pickup ( old light brown type as shown on this instrument in question ) there at that same time period with the intention of installing it in a Gibson EB-0 type single pickup configuration . I had been told that I would need to provide a buffer preamp and hum-canceling coil system for the probability of success. ;) .

Forgive my ignorance but couldn't those two pickups on that bass be wired as a humbucker with two separately spaced coils and get some kind of hum cancellation if not entirely quiet?

Maybe the HX is inside, like on early Alembics?

I believe this may be the same bass... we had a thread running on it a while back, when it was for sale...
