Title: Let 'em have it.
Post by: Zut8083 on June 21, 2018, 09:57:41 PM
I am not a New Orleaner, but there is a store that sells furniture and furnishings at a discount called Frankie and Johnny's there, where the low prices are available to all at the discretion of the "Special Man" who says "Let 'em have it!" in their commercials.

I have now seen an online musical instrument retailer who does the same thing.  I get the feeling something is funny, as if these axes were made in a different time zone, ~12,000 miles away, painstakingly churning out "Givson", "Bender", or "CRS" guitars.  Or maybe there is something else going on here that is really weird that allows you to pay 10 or 25 cents on the dollar for a guitar.

Check it, and if you score a CRS McCarthy Standard, let me know how it plays.  For 50-200 bucks it's a tempting experiment to try.  But not that tempting.

I know something's wrong with this setup, but I don't know what.  It's still astounding the extent to which they are slashing prices.  Yow.

A few years back, a friend of mine decided he'd been without a Les Paul for too long & went shopping; saw what Gibson was offering & what they wanted for them,  said "What the hell; at $275 what can I lose?", and ordered up a Chibson.  Did a light fret dress, played it - and bought another.
As he put it:  "Is the real thing better?  Well, yeah.  Is it $3500 better?  Not even close!"

While I am not really comfortable with a Chinese product that  has a fake logo on the front of the headstock & "Made in USA" on the back, I have to say they are decent instruments - and I will lay the blame for any inroads they make into market share not on the overseas entrepreneurs selling them, but rather on the shameful price:quality ratio American companies (by which, of course, I mean Gibson & Fender - especially the former) are giving us.

If I were to buy one, however, i would have to get leather-working dies & stamp "FAKE" into the back of the headstock, just in case my plan to live forever falls through.......

Is this place hocking all of the low-cost, asian-made, big-name guitars  that don't make it past QC prior to shipping to the big-names stateside, and completing their labeling/fit and finish to sell at a discount?  Or do you think it is a different scam?  "4 days" old.  Wow.

But if the neck is straight, has a decently strong/stable joint, and an OK truss rod, as Peter alluded to, PLEK the sucker, and go shopping for name brand guts and hardware, and set it up nicely to see what two installments of $49.95 in international commerce will do for a rousing rendition of Kashmir.

Personally, I bet the headstocks fall off and peel away the fretboards upon tuning.  Should stick with your own personal Pan-Alembic.
