Title: Adding Contours?
Post by: NortonThevenin on March 17, 2018, 09:56:18 AM
Dearest brothers and sisters of Alembic-

Is it at all conceivable to add tummy and/or elbow contours to an existing instrument? Is there precedence for doing this? I would assume it would involve return to Alembic for modification and also a refinish. Love to hear any one's experience with this.

Cheers,

Nick

My opinion is, if you really like the bass and want to have it contoured to fit you better, go for it. If it's an Alembic, I would send it back to the mothership and have them do it, so that it is done right. Depending how much wood is removed, could affect the balance.

One other concern (depending on the model) might be a hollowed body core. Put me in the 'go ahead and do it' column, but send it to Alembic.

All good points... Provided that it's a solid body or a hollow core that we carve very gently, it does require a complete refinish. It's also good to book the time before hand, as it can take 8 months+ to get on the schedule due to previous commitments.
