Post by: edwardofhuncote on October 09, 2017, 06:26:00 AM
Mica, and Family, and Alembic Staff-

Just seeing footage on Weather Channel this morning, there's a big fire in Santa Rosa, with some evacuations in progress... sure hope you're all safe there.   ???

Mica contacted me to say that their internet is down, and asked that I post this message to you all:

"There are major fires in our area. So far it's not a threat to our home or business. But the winds are horrendous and we pray that we will stay safe.

"We have told everyone to stay home today to keep the roads more clear for the evacuees."

Thanks for posting the update, Dave. Luckily we are all safe so far. We'll be closed today because of all the disarray around us. Internet service is down at Alembic, but we're at the south end of town and remain safe from the fires at this point.

I have been in contact with friends who have sadly lost everything save themselves. This fire started at 1 in the morning, and we had horrendous winds gusting to 45 mph etc. Humidity was down to 10-20% and didn't come up much overnight. The fire was 200 acres and then bloomed to over 20,000. We could see the flames on other side of Mount Taylor over night.

2 major hospitals were evacuated at the north end of town. A mobile home park burned away, and the shopping center at the north end of town is aflame.

Good to hear that the Alembic family and facilities are safe. We live in Oakland and were woken in the middle of the night by the sounds of extremely high wind and the intense smell of smoke. Living in the Oakland Hills we were worried that there was a fire nearby. Hoping that there are no deaths or injuries related to the blaze, homes and possessions can be replaced.

I'm glad to hear the Alembic Family is well.  Currently on a road trip on my Harley and was planning to stop by the Factory Tuesday (tomorrow) to check on the progress of my Classico.  Will now route my way around the area and attend another time.

Mica.....when things calm down a bit, can you give me any update on my bass?

Sending good thoughts to the North Bay.  As Stephen noted, it got quite windy here last night.  We're at 1600 feet and have been under a Red Flag warning for the past couple of days.  All it takes is one reckless idiot with a match.  Glad to hear our Alembic family is o.k. so far.

Good to hear you are all safe for the moment and am hoping it will stay that way. I know it can be nerve wracking not knowing which way the fires will go having been in a similar situation when we lived in NorCal. Will keep you in my thoughts.

Stayed up all Sunday night watching one of the fires burn to within a mile or so of my house, thankfully it was stopped. I can do without any more of that kind of excitement. Had the Roguss and my upright in the car ready to go if we had to evacuate but by the time the order came the fire was clearly on the wane so we decided not to join the traffic jam unless the threat became more imminent. I feel very fortunate, have at least one friend whose house burned to the ground.

Glad to hear all at Alembic are safe.  I'm in San Rafael and we are getting fallout from the fires.  There is a lot of smoke in the air, ash everywhere.  A guitar player friend in Santa Rosa lost everything.

Thank goodness, Kent. Glad to hear you guys remained safe. So many have lost so much. A dear friend lost her house in Kenwood and barely got out of the danger.

Yesterday we took a couple of loads of pillow and blankets and other needed items to Elsie Allen High School that is set up as a Red Cross evac center and shelter. I'm going back this afternoon to see what other gaps there are in the wish list and try to fill them in.

We decided to try to be a little normal today and go back to work. I don't think the website is up, and we don't have email yet either. The Alembic Club is hosted in another state.

Very sorry to hear of the loss by your friends and neighbors.  Is there a local relief group or shelter that people can donate to (funds, items, food, etc.)?  It’s been a crazy year for natural disasters.

The fire continues. We have still remained fortunate. Today several people won't be at the shop as the high winds are expected to pick up again and mandatory evacuation orders keep rolling in. We did get email and internet restored a few hours ago, but I think the email went down again.
The loss of life and property is staggering here.

This disaster is so beyond words for me , I am so sad . I have a friend  named Rod who is a drummer that  I have played music with and done gigs on and off for over 30 years . Him and his Wife  Lisa live in the "Coffey Park" area of Santa Rosa . "Coffey Park "seems to be gone now and we have not heard from Rod and  Lisa in a while .  I am hoping that they are safe some where .

Just glad that (so far) everyone is safe. I have a sister in Sebastopal, and while they've been really smokey, they have not had to evacuate. One of my coworker's husband is a CDF firefighter on the Atlas fire, and he's been there since Monday morning and hasn't rested other than short naps on the line. He said that this is beyond bad...

Glad to see our Alembic family is still ok. I just got into the website right now. I haven't been able to access it since the fires were on the news.
I finally called Aunt Mary last night after 6pm here (but after 3pm your time), fearing the worst.  I was glad to hear that you were all ok for now,
but you were still having trouble with the website. My prayers are with you that this fire can be contained soon, and that you'll remain safe.

So glad to hear that your friends are okay Wolf. Hope the cats escaped, too, and are eventually found.

We have friends up in Guernville that are ready to evacuate if they have to. Been hard to communicate with them since Internet and phone service is down in the area. One of them works at the Jewish camp in Santa Rosa that was destroyed. He is a carpenter so I imagine there will be lots of work going forward but that doesn't make up for such a stressful tragedy. I haven't heard back from friends in Napa but they live in town so I am assuming they are safe so far.

Air quality in Oakland was pretty good when I woke up but has been getting worse by the hour. There is a sickly orange-yellow glow to what little sunlight is able to penetrate the smoke and haze.

Tony's mom lost her home. Tony makes the pickups here. He's taking care of her now and will probably not be back to work this week. We're all on edge and glued to local radio and phone alerts, hoping we don't get an evac order. Some friends are staying with us who had to evacuate. All Santa Rosa schools are closed. It's at least as bad as the reports on the TV.

The Coffey Park area is a forest of chimneys among smoldering ashes. There is nothing there. We just found out our accountant lost her home. We are just hoping the winds die down again because they are strong again today and the humidity is in the 12-20% range, so not good at all.

We're probably all going home early, but it was somehow comforting coming to the shop today, and just being together.

Hey Mica, having just gone through a natural disaster here in Houston, I know how you are feeling. The feeling of losing control of your environment is devastating on your nervous system. Good on you for helping out. A little help goes a long way for those who need it most. Let's them know they are not alone, and there is someone out there who cares, and is looking after them. All the best to you guys now, and during your recovery!!

When I awoke this morning, sixty miles south of Santa Rosa, it smelled like a campfire and the sky was smoky/hazy, like everything was in a fog.  (If only I were an Impressionist painter!). I drove another forty mile south to San Jose for court this afternoon.  One humdred miles south of the fires, it stilled smelled strongly of smoke and visibility was significantly reduced.  The aerial shots of totally decimated neighborhoods are heartbreaking.  It seems like we've been bombarded with disasters and tragedies, one after another, lately.  Very sad.

Here's a photo taken from the back yard of the Gables Wine Country Inn. The flames are +/- 2 miles away.

We stay at the Gables when we visit Santa Rosa and seeing this image is truly terrifying and heartbreaking at the same time.

Such a beautiful area - it is tragic that it is being systematically destroyed in such a violent manner.

Having lived through something similar about 12 years ago (large desert fire north of Cave Creek, AZ), I know first hand what it feels like to see a wall of flames about a mile away and be unable to do anything about it other than pray that it gets extinguished.

I can't fathom the loss. Even with the brick & mortar of the mothership unscathed, the amount of devastation in the community must be overwhelming. Thoughts, prayers, and lots of love to Tony, his family, and your accountant... If there's anything we can do as an online community, Mica, please let us know!

This is about the best map I've found that is at least updated regularly with details from several reporting agencies:

http://www.pressdemocrat.com/multimedia/7516058-181/live-map-of-wildfires-burning?ref=most

We are all still safe, and with the thousands of National Guard and firefighters and police from all around the nation (even some from as far as Australia!) here battling this blaze, we are hopeful that they will get it under control. It's not over by a long shot, but it's better than it was a few days ago for sure.

Hope you were able to check in on your cousin, Greg. Yes David, our beautiful county is deeply scarred. Everyone here is feeling the anguish and pain, but are pulling together and helping out. Keep praying for rain, Edwin - we hear it might show up in about a week. Michael, I'm going to keep the club posted about anything that can be done to assist those in need. Right now Tony's mom is staying with family in another county, and they will be figuring out a longer term plan shortly.

We still have friends at our place that were in the mandatory evacuation zone. Just learned that their house survived the fire, but they probably won't be allowed back in until next week sometime.

So glad to hear you guys are all OK.  I've spent most of this late summer early fall worrying about family in Texas dodging and surviving Hurricane Irma:  My niece lives in Houston, fortunately in a 2nd story loft with parking on the same floor (so she was OK) and her mother (my sister) lives in my hometown of Beaumont, TX, the place you may remember lost all water service (in the middle of a flood, there's a country song in there somewhere), and their home stayed dry.  Now I'm sweating fires on the left coast.  Geez, will I be glad when things settle down.

All the best to the Alembic family, and I'm thinking of you guys constantly.

Also very relieved to hear at least the 'Mothership' has been spared. I'm not somebody that ever even watches television casually, but this past week has changed that trend somewhat. This has to be one of the worst years ever for natural disasters.  :(

The only way we have to contact Dad's cousin is by email, which so far hasn't yielded any information. I can't help but think Internet service is sketchy if available at all right now, but we'll know more as the smoke clears. (literally)

As a youth, I saw my great uncle's home destroyed by some careless folks with fireworks. I've ridden out several hurricanes, Matthew hit us particularly hard, but the amount of devastation and loss from this has me speechless. I had no idea of the extent of it's impact until seeing videos the other day. It's comforting to know you all remain safe and am thankful that you have taken the time to keep us informed of your well-being. So everyone is back at work today, although we can hardly call it back to normal. The smoke is still very thick in the air, and we wear masks even to get to the car. The threat from the major fires seems to be reduced greatly to all of our homes, and for that we are grateful. The accounting has begun, and it appears that 1 in 20 homes in Santa Rosa is lost. I haven't seen any of the damaged areas first hand, as they are at the northern edge of town and I want to stay out of the way. From the images looking in person isn't going to inform any more - where there was fire everything is gone.
Schools are closed for this whole week, so it's possible you might hear a little voice answering the phone. UPS is not doing outbound shipments yet, so we appreciate your patience.

I was just telling our audience last night of the plight facing the folks in the town where my bass was made. 1 home in 20 is bad, especially for a place that size.

Mica, no idea if you can get inbound shipping, but I have access to all the particulate respirators you could possibly need. I figured you already had some in the shop, but if you need more, or if they're (understandably) in short supply out there, hit me. ;)

Thanks, Greg! We passed out enough so everyone could have them at home for family, and as you suspected, the whole town was out of them last week. I was at Friedman Borthers (local hardware store) on Saturday and found their "seasonal" display when you walk in the main entrance was a wall of particle masks and respirators.
