I wanted to invite everyone in the club to our third annual Labor Day Weekend Party. Come and enjoy the views from the top of the East Bay Hills. Great food and drink and live music including our own Harry (Hieronymous) and his band, and the Lomas Cantadas All Stars featuring our own Wolf (Sonicus) and yours truly. Anyone who wants to come and hasn't yet received an email evite should contact me and I'll see you get an evite and necessary info. The party is also a fundraiser for CalNORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws). Donations are voluntary and there will be an auction.

... such a long drive. :'(
Appreciate the invite and look forward to pictures and sound bites!

I'll be there in spirit.

Quick question from the old country. When's labor day?
Graeme

Labor Day is the first Monday in September. This year it is Sept. 4. Our party is on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, hence this year it is on the 3rd. (That gives me Saturday to set up, and Monday to clean up!). This is not to be confused with Star Wars Day, which is May the 4th (as in "May the 4th be with you"). For a rather twisted view of the significance of Labor Day, I recommend the film "Serial Mom" starring Kathleen Turner.

(Leftie labor historian bites his lip on a rant about the US using Labor Day to supplant May Day.....)
Peter (who thinks it sounds like fun, but will be nursing Her back from another shoulder replacement)

Bill,
I quietly support the cause and will also be there in spirit just like Edwin.
Have a great day everyone. I love Bill's place the views are breathtaking!

To Peter (Cozmik Cowboy), sorry about the shoulder. Don't want to hijack the thread so please email me at foster939@msn.com . I might be able to help you out.

The Labor Day Party was great fun! Fortunately it cooled off from the 100+ degrees of the previous two days! Plus Bill had set up a misting station. Anyway, a big thanks to Bill for hosting and allowing my band Stanley Lighthead to perform - it was only the fourth time we performed live, and the weekend was the first time in four years that we played together. The drummer Patrick is hoping to move back from Salt Lake City at some point, hope he can because we really enjoy playing together.

Pics??? (I always look forward to seeing you West Coast guys....)

I'll share this pic because it shows how I've been holding my Stanley Clarke Signature Squared bass - I had it lower for a while and am tempted to try it again. The other shows part of the set-up - it was so nice to just show up with instruments and play using a powerful backline!

VERY nice!! Thanks for posting - and, WOW! A 5-er, eh? I do prefer that 2 + 3 set-up, also. I've got it on mine, and love it. (Although, as I think I mentioned on here before, the first time I went to tune the A string, I started twisting the E tuner!!)
-
Nice. I see you position your thumb on top of the fretboard. I do the same with my Orion, the angle of my arm and wrist just feels more comfortable playing from there.
-
Me too! Plus.... moar bass!
-
I noticed this too. Interestingly, that 'sweet-spot' is in exactly the same place on both my Distillate and Custom basses, but is closer to, or right over the neck pickup of my Persuader. Love that 5-string Stanley Clarke Sig. :)
-
Yes - I've been working on this technique for a few years now - I even had the bass lower, so that my left hand was almost like upright bass position. I got a new strap a couple of months ago, might experiment with that some more, though it felt pretty good this time around.
One major player who I noticed plays with their thumb on the fretboard is Stanley Clarke himself:

Though not necessarily all the time:

Actually, part of my having the bass lower was so that I could try and duplicate his finger position without having my arm bent up like he does.

Harry, you'll never perfect it until you grow the fro!

lol - I'll work on it for the next Alembic Gathering!
-
Harry,
I wear my bass at the same height. It's a comfortable right arm position for me and it allows me to comfortably position my bass in a lot of neck angles. I can bring the neck nearly vertical so the first fret is below shoulder height, but almost in the middle of my chest.

Probably not until after he's a teenager, though!

I forgot about that! I got to meet him once at Amoeba SF a few years ago - I love that in this picture he's adjusting his star glasses - they must be prescription!

Here's video of the Lomas Cantadas All Stars.... at least that's what we called ourselves for the party. Sorry for the farting around at the beginning. The song starts,at about 1:05.

Grate job guys !!
Sounds really clean.. ;)
-
Thanks. With an Alembic bass through an F-1X, and a guitar running Alembic guts through an F-2B, you're gonna get clean! And full!
