A beautiful 1978 Series I guitar
-
Yours?
Also, congrats on your 666th post! 😀🎸
-
Hi Rob,
Yes, I recently purchased this nice guitar...I guess we know who made me do it! :)
Rob
-
Congrats on a nice guitar Rob... you've got quite a family of middle-aged Alembics going there. ;)
(#265 is still my favorite!) ;D
-
Thanks, Greg, the middle-aged group is a good group, I like the classics! (...I like 265 as well) :)
-
Three bronze markers at the 12th fret on this one, wonder how common that was/is?
-
A fantastic guitar! :)

Such a cool old guitar... Peruvian walnut - only a few of those listed as such.
*I'm absolutely sure I have seen the triple-marked 12th and 24th frets before. But I could swear it was a fretless bass.
-
After a little bit over a year in my care, #78-1116 is headed back to Rob. I've enjoyed every minute spent with this Peruvian Walnut Series I Classic.
It's a very special instrument that helped me image what an Alembic guitar can do. I'll always have that audio image.
For posterity:
-
My goodness.
-
Thanks for taking such good care of it and providing the opportunity for it to make its way back to me, looking forward to playing it again!
-
i nominate rv_bass for the man of the year.
that series II is gonna make a cripple outta me...
-
:)
-
Nice guitar Rob... enjoy having it again!

I would certainly add Greg and a few others to that category for sure :)
-
Very cool!
-
Arrived safely…roll away… :)

In my Control Room, on her 43rd Birthday... May 11th, 2021. ;)
(not every Water Plant in America comes equipped with a practice amp...)
-
Now that’s the way to work!
It’s a good photo too in that it shows how big these guitars really are. :)
-
When I saw John Dawson (New Riders of the Purple Sage) play his Alembic guitar in the mid-70s it definitely looked huge on him, he was fairly short and skinny.
Who made the case for 78-1116? Looks nice as does the guitar itself. Play it in good health!
-
Thanks, Stephen. I had Calton make a case for it. Heavy case, but built like a tank. :)
-
I can vouch for the tank-like nature of those Calton cases. And that guitar had not one millimeter of play when seated in it. Yes they are expensive, but worth every nickel. I could probably have shipped 1116 home to Rob in just the case. [gasp] (No, I didn't...) ::)
Further musing on my experience with a vintage Series guitar... when not playing it on-duty, through my cheesy little Epiphone amp... out of my old DS-5 bluebox to a pair of Fender Princeton Reverb amps was the ticket to get the full effect. After a lot of experimentation, I found using a '68 for the neck pickup and a '65 for the bridge to be my favorite. The '68, definitely more of a harsher tone, I had swapped out the stock Eminence 30 (?) speaker for a Tone Tubby San Rafael. That warmed it up considerably. The '65 has a Celestion Cream 90w Alnico. Every time I think about changing that speaker, I plug something in and play for a few minutes... and... forget about it! It's just perfect.
All in all, the sound was just magical. I'm just as happy with the beautiful, (if slightly plain) maple-topped Little Darling I fell for this past Spring, and things being what they are, I shouldn't even have it. It sounds pretty good though this same rig just using the ABY box. Stereo, or Series... well, no... but she has her charms too. But that's another thread. https://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=26951.0
Thanks Again to Rob. I was happy to be just a little part of that guitar's history. It was a very big part of mine. :)
-
And a big thank you to Greg, very generous to let it go, certainly made my year! :)
