Title: silver inlay polishing
Post by: rv_bass on January 01, 2017, 06:16:47 AM
I checked the FAQ section but did not see a reference, so I thought I'd ask here.

What is the preferred solvent and method used for polishing silver inlays on the fretboard (and logo on headstock) without damaging the wood, finish, and abalone/mother of pearl inlays?

Thanks!

Try a Pink Pearl eraser Rob, it's very mildly abrasive but won't hurt the fingerboard. Follow with a dab of lemon oil. ;)

Thanks, Greg, I'll give that a try!

The Alembic silver polishing cloth is easy to use and does a great job of cleaning silver. Soft, dry and non-abrasive plus it has the Alembic logo on it. Not sure why it is not offered for sale online (at least I wasn't able to find it on the website). Mica always brings them to the yearly CA gathering, you could get in touch with her and ask how you can get one.

Thanks, Stephen, I will inquire about one.  I will also look locally for a silver polishing cloth.

Yeah, I don't have them in the store, I guess I can add them sometime. Until then, go to any Target, Macy's, or whatever regional department store you can reach and get a Connoisseur's silver polishing cloth. Just be careful when polishing the logo. There is no pin at the top of the cloud, and if the cloth gets between the logo and the peghead and you're vigorously polishing away, you can bent the logo pretty well.
Then ones I include with new basses and guitars are smallish. The ones you can get at the stores are quite a bit bigger.

I tried the pink eraser on the silver logo and the abalone fret inlays.  It worked great on both and really cleaned and brightened them up.  Thanks for the tip, Greg!
