Hello fellow bassists! ...and guitarists...
Maybe this would be better in Introductions Topic... yesterday I got my hands on my very first Alembic!
Previously playing basses from mass mill producing companies I can't belive my eyes at the arrival of this piece of true art. A '81 Series1 (granny) with flamed Koa top and back laminates, for Alembic owners maybe a standart instrument w/o any spectacular upgrades (nevertheless the tone IS spectacular indeed) but for me it's heaven! The first Bass ever played meeting all my needs. Unbelievable. And a cutie as well... big one!
Do you remember the first time strapping on and playing your own Alembic? A bit surreal (sort of ;-), wasn't it? For me it is and i hope this feeling will never pass.
I'm very happy - and yes, now I know, nobody can do it better than Alembic.
Kind greetings from Germany
Kai (the proud one)

Flamed Koa is hardly a standard item--you can't get it at all anymore, let alone with figured grain. Wear it with pride, sir, on a wide, wide strap.
Welcome, and for God's sake post pictures before Paul (TBO) starts bellyaching,
KFS

I'll never forget my reaction the first time I held my first Alembic - a fretless walnut Excel 4.

I still adore that Bass - and still get that feeling every time I hold it.

Agreed, every time I strap on my flame walnut custom I feel something very special.

Can't get Koa?

I was giddy with excitement just looking at my first Alembic (85 Persuader, Bocate top) hanging on the wall of the store. I ran home and got my two Fenders and offered to trade even fot it. To my suprise, the offer was accepted.

Now, I've got some bottles. Bro Paul TBO, help me to empty them!!!!

Welcome from the ANEC,
JP

First post in a long time for me but...

Alembics are definitely the world's best instruments. Trouble is I've just left uni with a degree (Chem and Business), but ?14,500 ($25,000) of debt and so I'm still waiting for my 1st Lemby. I'm hoping for that Series I or II custom job one day (with the Periodic table-styled inlays).

PS - got a Hohner B2A for my 21st - great fun VERY Very loud and good to travel with, expect for the fact people think I'm carrying a shotgun!!

Hi Ben,

Ah, I remember my Hohner B2A . . . you're right, great fun, loud and punchy and very versatile. Over here in the UK, they tend to get referred to as 'cricket bats' . . . When you spend so much time babying your big, heavy, precious Alembic and making sure she never gets bashed about, it's actually quite refreshing to play something like the B2 - best thing about it is that it bounces . . . (but I don't recommend trying it just for the hell of it!).

Have fun!

K.

Hello Kai,

nice to see another German Alembic player here.
Is your Series 1 the one from Station Music?
I thought I remember the pic seen on their website.

Hi Harald, wie gehts?
Yes, it was one of Lothar Walters own Alembics. But since he is playing 5 or 6 stringers it was very easy for me to buy this precious. Was there at the right time... lucky me
BTW, I gigged with her 6 times the last three weeks... after half of the first gig I thought oh my Gawd, this hurts, she's so heavy (in any relation ;-)  my back will fall of if I play on with her, so I switched to my old Goodfellow Rumour Bass and then... no good tone, s/th thinnish... bad!
But I'm getting more and more comfortable with her and I never ever want to miss that Alembic tone! It seems to me that playing a Series Bass is something like challenging, huh? (of course not as hard as challenging the Stick like you do, Harald, way to go!)
Mebbe a wider strap would be better...?
Fortunately our next gigging time will be in November for supporting Mungo Jerry (I didn't now he's living in my town since 15 years, 3 miles away from our rehearsal mill)... that means time enough for me and Frau Holle to get in shape.

And you are the one with 76278? I've seen her some times when I was googling after Alembics ASO. A real classic Series1 you have there, I love this clean lacewood very much.
But how do you (and all Alembisized as well) care about your Bass when you're gigging? I'm very afraid of dings and dongs and scratches and all and just like to execute every person who wants to touch Frau Holle these days. Not a good thing. In fact it's a bad thing and I'm feeling this the first time ever... should I have a speech with a psychatrist or will it pass someday? ;)

i can't believe how fenderized the musical community is...i recently picked up a new pbass and i can't begin to tell anyone what a piece of crap this thing is...frets popping up...muddy sound...lousy finish...on and on...with all the quality instruments on the market today it's about time to put the fender mystique to rest...for my money, alembic all the way

Kai, you named her already? Oh boy, you've been Alembisized alright. A psychatrist won't help. Alembic owners tend to think of the instruments as part of the family.
Congratulations and welcome.

Well, I love my Rickenbackers; I love Pedullas too (and some Warwicks, especially the Dolphin); but Alembic are the best of the best. My Triple O is just staggering (although I'm still trying to find a rig worthy of it!). Whenever anyone sees it, their jaws just drop. And that's before I plug it in...

whoops!

Just noticed I got my p's and c's the wrong way round! It was a very long day yesterday, and I thought it looked a bit unusual, but never twigged what I had done wrong.
karl, I see the resemblance to a cricket bat as I sit looking at it. Only wish I could find some 40-105 maxima/optima gold strings to go on it.

I agree. No one does it better than Alembic. I just purchased a John Paul Jones 5. Although it is not a bass you want to use in a sit down situation, the Bass looks, sounds and feels great. It's fun to see all Bass players in the audience get googoo eyes when I whip it out.

ps. Whip out the Bass of course : )

Hi KEnneth,

Good boy to start with pictures but ...hehehe...seen my age my eyes are start to fail a bit so given the fact that I THINK that this a kind of buckeye whatever I think you should make us all happy with some more pictures on the appropriate department. Now i should say ...mmmmmm ...looks promising.

Congrats with your new addiction.
