Title: Another bike trip and another visit to the Mothership
Post by: 811952 on November 28, 2016, 07:51:07 AM
I was able to con the stars into aligning well enough that I got to take another bike trip from Indiana to the Mothership and back again in October. Life is indeed good or better. Here's my writeup of it, with pics, for those interested in such fare:

Unbelievable.  GREAT story about a truly great ride.  Thanks, by the way.  Only one pic inside Alembic, though?  (Guess I'll just have to go visit them myself...!)  I used to ride a bit, but no longer.  While I don't like to admit it, I am getting up there.  But, thanks to great posts like this one, it's all in your mind.  Right?

The pictures of the Mojave Desert bring back some memories. When I lived in SoCal in the late 70's I used to run Enduros there on the weekends.

John I live vicariously through your postings.  Someday I will make an epic bike ride, not sure my 81 XJ650 is up for that (or my butt), bucket list item for sure.

What kind of rubber do you run on?

Enjoyed the whole thing, really appreciated the story about Mike the vet.
Phil's bass looks delicious.

That brown recluse thing freaks me out. I just played at a memorial party for a musician friend here whose decline into poor health and ultimately death was started by a brown recluse bite while working in his basement. Don't try those at home! They are serious spiders. Rest of trip looked great, though!

Nice photos, looks like a fun trip.  Is that walnut as a top wood for Phil's new bass? Or is that what unfinished coco bolo looks like?

It looks like coco bolo to me.

Thanks for taking a look and for the kind words.

If memory serves, Phil's short scale 6-string is cocobolo. Geez, it's pretty, it's light and it's really small! Mica and I discussed his technique and preferred gauges, and how his light touch makes the low B work so well on something like this. I can't wait to see and hear the finished instrument.

Sorry for the lack of photos. There is of course no good way to capture conversation with a still camera. Every time I interact with the Wickersham/Thomas clan I am welcomed into the fold and find myself smiling a big smile because I know these are my people, if that makes sense.

One of my brothers (the only one who doesn't play bass) has a couple of Kawasaki KX500 2-stroke dirt bikes. I can imagine the rush of blasting down desert tracks on that thing. I can also imagine never getting all of the cactus spines  out of my elbows and shins. That must have been fun, Keith!

Paul, I'm running the Heidenau K60. I got something like 12k miles out of a rear tire, which is kind of a little bit incredible for a dual-sport motorcycle tire, particularly on a big bike. I'm pleased, to say the least, but I can also say that they don't hook-up very well in a wet hayfield and there's no way I'll ever be able to catch my brother in the field or woods on the KX500 with full knobbies. I will keep trying though.

My sister has been bitten by brown recluse a bunch of times. She says the secret is to not scratch it and it will bruise a bit then heal eventually. I got a bite and I'm confident it was a brown recluse. It bruised and itched like the dickens, but I didn't scratch it and it has mostly disappeared at this point. Count me as not a fan.

I rediscovered motorcycles a little more than a decade ago. It's been a very good thing and I've serendipitously met a multitude of fine people because of it. It might be the best way to travel.

The photo journal is great! Thanks for sharing these... most places that I've not been and a very nice way to vicariously see them.  Again, thanks!

Very enjoyable journal, thanks for posting. I love those cross-country bike rides, but haven't been able to do any for the past couple of years due to a new job and not enough time off built up yet. Next my Sweetie and I plan to ride once again from our home in Denver to Fur Peace Ranch in southern Ohio. Only 1450 miles each way, but it'll have to do!
And yeah, I hate to toss a tire that still has some miles left on it!

Here's pic from one of my rides to teach a class in Utah. I was hiding out under I-80 from a lightning storm, replete with hail.

No better way to see the country than on a motorcycle.

I looked into the Fur Peace Ranch and it seems like a good time. I really want to attend the Three of a Perfect Pair music camp, but it's right smack in the middle of our busiest time at work and the boss won't let me have that week off. :(

Hiding out under the highway, eh? I've looked at those longingly from time to time, but I figure my luck would have me riding out a flash flood in one.

Check out the Pick n Putt Motorcycle Weekend in September, in which motorcycle riding is thrown into the mix. 2017 will mark the 16th anniversary of Pick n Putt and the establishment of the Fur Peace Motorcycle Club. It's a fine time, indeed.... Jorma loves to lead the pack...

Sounds like something Indiana Jones would do . . . . riding the crest of a surging water wall.  :o

Wait a minute -
Indiana John!  :D
