They say it is a "custom" Orion because it has Rogue electronics and Rogue bodyshape... really?

Another round of our favourite game, "Name that Alembic!" ...

It is a set-neck bass with a mahogany body, so it can only have been ordered as an Epic or an Orion (a Rogue is always neck-through). Apart from the standard body shape, there isn't much to differentiate between those two, but seeing that the serial number includes the initials OW, it is undeniably an Orion. The custom options are the Rogue body shape (obviously), the Europe electronics (quite a popular custom option on Orions, and standard issue on a regular Rogue) and finally the bar tailpiece (again, standard issue on a regular Rogue). The inlay at the 12th fret may or may not have been done at the factory, no way to tell without the buildsheet.

Hmm. That brings up an interesting question... I wonder what model designation my custom fretless build will be given?  ???

Technically it was ordered (and appears on the quote) as an Essence, but there is very little in common with a standard Essence model on the actual as-built bass. I don't remember for sure, but I think we just picked Essence because it was the closest circuit to East-Meets-West electronics, although I suppose the same could be said about Orion/Epic basses equipped with Rogue/Europa electronics. (which were my second choice)

I'll have to ask Mica about that one sometime.

That's a really nice one! Between the weight and the upper horn (balance), I would imagine that it is one comfortable bass to play.

Yours is going to have a "C" in the serial number, Greg.

Edward
Thanks for the heads up! I just purchased this bass off of ebay. He is shipping it from California 3 day air so I won't get it until this coming Thursday. I now have two Rogues and one Orion and hopefully this will be the best of both worlds! It weighs about a pound and three quarter less than the Rogues and just a hair heavier than the Orion. Once I get it I'll take a family portrait.

Right on Darrell, you're getting quite the collection. Glad my addiction is costing somebody else! ;)
