Title: Unknown Alembic Player
Post by: kukuforcoco on February 06, 2005, 03:11:15 PM
Thought that maybe someone here would be interested in this. On the Allman Brothers Band DVD Brothers of the Road the bass player David Goldflies plays a couple of different Alembics. He wasn't the most popular of ABB bassists but I like his playing and you can hear his clear tone coming through the mix. Beware if you buy this DVD as there are some painful synth parts from the second piano player.

Hi Craig; I don't have that DVD.  Which models does he play?

I think that they are a signature and a series that he plays. Its from two concerts from the late 70's or early 80's. I'm a big fan of all the musicians that have been through the ABB rotation. The new line-up is a blast but my favorite is from the 90's when Allen Woody was rocking Red Rocks.

I saw Allen Woody playing his Alembic with the ABB, must've been '91-'92 at the Orpheum in Boston. What a mind-blowing concert! Oil-and-water and 18-string bass... For some reason I feel like he used his Alembic on the second song, which was Blue Sky, but I don't really trust my memory that much.

Lamar Williams played an Alembic too - there are bios and pics of everybody at the  Allman Brothers Band website (http://www.allmanbrothersband.com/index.php target=_blank), it's a pretty detailed website, but click on people in the menu to the left...

The only Allman Brothers DVD I have is Beacon Theatre, which I love.

I saw Rook Goldflies with the Brothers on the '79 Enlightened Rogues tour. This was the reunion tour that featured Dangerous Dan Toler on guitar (along with Dickie). He was very young and visually did not blend too well with the rest of the band, but his playing was decent. I don't remeber him playing an Alembic at that time. As a side note, the opening act was NRPS with most of the original players minus Torbert and Cage (Bobby Blue Black was on steel...and was decent).
