Mica-
Do y'all know these guys?

It looks like they have/had pieces of burls that would do a standard point in a single piece. How cool would that be???

Yup. Some of the nicer Buckeye Burls come from them. We got one that weighed over 600 pounds! That is an expensive transport bill.
We just finished our first one-piece top bass ever! You might remember that wide piece of Spalted English beech we had by the Timesaver when you visited last.

It'll be on it's way to Superbass next week.

Whoa!! My uncle Bob just got back with 2 MASSIVE slices of Madrone Burl. These are so big, we can almost get a Classico top from them.
I don't think Chip will get them processed to bookmatches for a couple of weeks - do stay tuned, the density and consistency of figure looks almost unreal.

Wayne-
Thanks for the link. The Red Amboynas maybe just what I am looking for. I am keeping an eye out for an unusual red wood for my dream project. I wonder if Mica and company have any experience with it.

I remember Mica telling me that they do have some experience with Burl Amboyna. Go here for a bass made from it:

I believe it's in the same family as Padauk and is purported to have similar tonal qualities. I haven't really seen any Amboyna actually come out looking very red. It does regularly vary from a buttery yellow (in the case of the bass above) to a dark fiery orange. I could totally be wrong though. This is a REALLY nice piece:

I like the color of the pic you posted and I looked at the link you posted. I wonder if the finish darkens it to the brownish color on the Essence.
I also saw the picture you posted of the burl redwood. That's what really got me on this red kick. I am looking for something in a contrasting red and black pattern, something a little more exciting than just straight grain or painted maple. You seem to doing some serious looking at less than common woods. If you see anything else exciting please post a link or picture. Thanks.
