Brothers and sisters!
Go to the fridge - pick up a beer and have a sip before you read this!
Astonishing!
A couple of days ago I read this article that a Danish beer club orgnaised a contest (september 2002) to determine the best beer in the word. THere were 540 beers from all over the world and 130 people from different nationalities were tasting.
Hold on...
...the number one beer:
was brewed by a Boston based Brewery. The article didn't mentioned a type or brand.
CAN YOU IMAGINE???????????
(I have a another sip ...or better a quafff).
 
However ...however ...however!
Number 2:
was an abbey beer (see another thread about that abbey/monk thing) called ABT from the St. Bernardus brewery in Watou (Belgium near Poperinge = belgian/french border). I tasted it: DELICIOUS but (oops) very STRONG (12? alcohol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).
Number 3:
was the Gauloise Blonde -no you french cigarette smokers not a cigarette brand- a beer brewed by brewey Du Bocq in Namur (Belgium - walloon county). I didn't taste it yet.
 
AHAAAAAAAAA! that makes 2 out of three!!
 
So ...Boston based members (the ANEC chapter I guess) ... can anybody tell me what beer that it was???

I'm not from Boston; but my guess is Samuel Adams.

Sam Adams is a good guess but it could also be from a brewery named Harpoon. They make a few different flavors of beer and ale. All I've tried are pretty good. Well, at least I liked them...
 
There are literally dozens and dozens of brewers in the New England area. Anything coming from New England can be considered Boston to the rest of the world......

There is also Ipswich Brewing Company, Buzzard's Bay Brewing Company.......
 
I would go with the Sam Adams guess, though. Maybe a bock, or triple bock if it is that strong.
 
I do prefer Harpoon and Buzzard's Bay to Sam Adam's, tbh.

Have you tried Sam's Triple Bock.  WOW!!!!  That's not beer, that's MUD!!!
It wouldn't happen to be from the brewery out on Nantucket would it!?!?
Or my other guess my be Rapscallion from the Acton brewing company!?!?
BTW-Isn't it time to schedule another ANEC meeting???   I'm getting thirsty!!!!!

Man, you guys are killing me. I'm stuck at work on a marathon eidt session, won't see the sun or the kids until Friday afternoon and you're talking about beer! AAAAAAAAGGHHHHHHHHH!
Since we're talking about goooood beer, let me tell you something to make you cringe. We had the good fortune to be stationed in Munich for a few years in the late 70's, during our 'formative years'. Found just about every beer hall and garden that would allow 16 year olds to purchase ice cold bier, bocks und pilsners. For about 6DM you could get a wurst, brochen and two liters of your choice. More than enough to send a happy teenager on his dizzy way in search of the right S-bahn (S2 to Fasangarten) to get his sorry butt home. Zwei bier, bitte schon! Life was, shall we say, good.
 
Now, the ugly part of the story...We've been stateside for 20 plus years and you know what my brother's brew of choice is? That crap from Colorado: Coors and it's tincup flavored brethren, Keystone. Gag, I'm begining to think he's not my brother after all.
 
What a world what a world. Oh yeah, although I've tons of work to do, I do have time to check out the club, somethings can't be missed.

Kirin with Oriental food, Harp with steak, and Perroni with stromboli and pasta.  
 
 And for God's sake, if you won't drink the water down there, why drink Corona?  The lime slice?  Better take your Corona with a Betadine shooter !

Don't be so hard on Corona. I like it a lot, with or without a lime ;) But then again, I like a lot of different beers for different reasons. Ever since I started brewing beer, I can find something good in almost any beer......

Hmm, a Boston beer number 1. Not surprised Mass, heck all of New England is a great place for beer lovers. In fact, beer and skiing may force me to end my self imposed exile to Florida and return home. I am especially partial to Ipswich Brewing Co. A bit prejudiced growing up in Ipswich, but they make a great brew, also love the big jugs they come in called  growlers My next local favorite I don't think is available outside of the Boston area, but if you are in the city there used to be a place called Commonwealth Brewery down by the Fleet Center that made an outstanding Porter yum yum. I have been away for several years, anybody know if it is still there?

Even though I don't drink any more,when I did,the best beer in the world was brewed in Evansville IN.and was called Hoosier Red.It was the same place that made Carling Black Label I think.The beer nor the brewery no longer exsist but,to me,it was better than any I ever had before and I just about tried them all.

I do believe it is still there!!!  It's been a while since I've been there though.  Here's one that I never knew....
The  Sam Adams brewery in Boston is the old Heffenrefer brewery from years ago.  I did not know that.  Does anybody remember the Green Death
Man Carling Black Label, that brings back memories too.

Thanks for the update, glad to hear the Commonwealth is still there. Heffenrefer, there's a blast from the past. Used to drink alot of that back in college, though I forget why. I also, had no idea that brewey became the home of Sam Adams. Obviously I need to renew my beer studies in earnest ;-p

Oh my God, yes. I remember the Green Death. I recall having a six pack when I was 17 or so and needing directions from my next door neighbor to find my way home.... She was sitting on her front porch!
 
I also remember a Black Label brewery right in Natick, Mass. I think it's an ice cream plant now....
 
All this wonderful reminising and we still haven't ID'd that #1 beer.

The article didn't say what the #1 beer was?  
I have to say that my favorite cheap beer is still Pabst Blue Ribbon.  It's the most fun you can have for $4.99 a twelve pack.  HA!!!

I think even my old college newspaper editor would have fired a journalist who wrote an article like that.  I understand he probably wrote it for the Benelux market, and that his main interest was on the local brews,  but to fail to even mention the name of the winning beer when he already wrote that local beers  took 2nd & 3rd is really asinine and a big no-no in journalism.  If your writing elicits an obvious question out of the reader ( who won #1? in this case) then it is your job to report on it if you have the information.  Just goes to show you there's incompetents in every field, and that goes for the editor too...now WE gotta go crazy guessing it...and Paul ( the Bad one) will not sleep well again until we do...
