Title: What about this for a custom bass
Post by: jazzyvee on June 06, 2005, 11:59:44 PM
I saw this on one of the web sites I use to get all my guitar strings from.

Edwin van Huik has one hanging in his store. I don't like it to be honest, especially when you take that pricetag into account...

That thing is a little too gaudy for my taste. I'd take my old Kent guitar over that any day.

It's the kind of bass that suits Bootsy's persona. The bass player from Mud had a heart shaped bass in the 70's (he was made up to be a bit camp but apparently wasn't) and Gene simmons has his Bloodaxe (or whatever). I personally wouldn't want to appear on stage with one of these creations, I'm much too conservative;-)

Graeme,

Not sure it could have been the bass player for Mud - one of the guitarists dressed funny, but the bass guy looked square (not counting the flares everyone was wearing).

Most of the guys from Slade dressed up, and the other guitarist - not Noddy - usually had funny shaped guitars. I seem to remember the bass player wielding a Gibson EB-3 or Hayman or Shergold - or something similarly uncomfortable.

Thanks for the flashback!

Adriaan.
You're probably right - it was quite some time ago.
When I saw Slade, Dave Hill had a Gun shaped guitar that IIRC shot sparks from the barrel(head).

Speaking of unique guitars there's Rick Nielsen's double neck Hamer with the body being a caricature of Rick.

Beleive it or not, but the first weird-shaped guitar I ever saw was the star/starburst guitar the Bjorn from ABBA used to play:

Definitely something you could take someone's eye out with!

Since we're looking at weird guitars, check out this Picasso Guitar made by famed Canadian luthier Linda Manzer for Pat Matheny

This site has got a record cover with a photo of Dave Hill's 'Super Yob' guitar and Gary Shepherd's (he of Glitter Band fame) 'Star Guitar'.

I believe John Birch made both of these.  Who said British guitar design never quite cut it!!!!!

This is like Bo Diddley's guitar, or Van Halen's Stripe guitars:  It's their signature, if you will.  It would sure look silly on me, but it really is Bootsy.  The real hoot is the 'Funny Basses' section over on BunnyBass, the ultimate
'What Were THey Thinking?' collection.

Speaking of guitarists dressing funny, when I saw Parliament/Funkadelic one of them wore a big diaper and a black leather jacket (which he took off later in the show, the jacket that is, not the diaper.)  The other one wore a white wedding dress with a lace veil.  It had spaghetti straps that kept falling off his shoulders.  George Clinton, who always looks wild, had a robe made out of what looked like a bedsheet with Disney's Aladdin cartoon characters on it.  That was a spectacle you don't see at every show.

Something about funk makes some musicians make unwise dress selections - Joe Bowie of Defunkt in tight spandex outfit being another unfortunate fashion victim ...

The diaper look used to be a regular at the Grateful Dead's New Year's shows back in the day.  (Luckily if was never Jerry in the diaper.  I would have had nightmares, no doubt).

I think the one in the wedding dress was Catfish, Bootsy's brother.

The one in the wedding dress is Andre Foxxe Williams, the diaper guy is Garry Shider.

The BBC have been running a series called 'Soul Deep' documenting the history of Black American music. This week was the rise of funk from James Browns early years through Sly, Bootsie, Parliament to hip hop. It's quite funny now seeing what everyone was wearing in the 70's - George Clinton dancing in the streets in a cape and chains on 6 inch platforms must have been quite a sight. There was alot of interview footage with Bootsie and he came across as a very articulate and passionate musician - just as gaudy as his signature bass though ;-)
