Since I am in the company of those who appreciate quality, I will risk raising a topic that has received much previous discussion. Indeed, I will also raise my glass, for the topic of which I speak is beer, yea beer of only the highest quality. For many years I was treated to the wares of a local brewery, highly esteemed for the excellence of its dark beers. But alas, with increasing demand the local Brewmaster grew tired of producing quantity, when quality was his sole ambition. Eventually the whiskey-barrel-aged imperials, the maibocks, and oatmeal stouts became a memory, only recalled in the event of the opening of some trove of vintage stock. A new brewer had replaced the master. The quality was good, much better than the trafe of the major breweries, but something was lost. Tonight I have tasted a beer that recalls dim memories, of quiet afternoons between chemistry classes, spent sipping rich, malty, flowing amber and reading Tolkien letters, poems and novels. Should fate ever gift you the chance, give pause to indulge yourself with Nostradamus Belgian Brown Ale. It is rich in palette, and weighs in at a gentle 9.5% alcohol. And now, a good eve to kith and kin, for the sweet singing of stringed instruments calls.

Which means I'll never try it here in North Carolina as the folks that see to my sobriety declare anything over 6% is a bit to much and likely lead me down the path to the firey pits of depair. :-(

I come from missouri, and I think the brewers in St. Louis would stomp any anti-alcohol legislation into the dirt. All that said, anheiser busch is considered to be the pinnacle of quality by almost everyone who lives here (Bud light is top shelf, right?). Fortunately I moved to missouri wine country, and there are actually some passable wines. The stonehill port received a 92 in wine spectator, for instance. This area is described as the Rhineland of Missouri (located near the river of the same name).

Alas for you who don't have the luck I do to live close to both Alembic and the Bear Republic Brewery, whose Racer 5 IPA is truly a thing of wonder. Drink a pint and you'll wonder what hit you.....
Best flavor of any IPA I've tried, as well.

The very few american beers I tried were too sweet for my tooth.
I love beers who are bitter (fe. Duvel) or sour (fe. Geuze: try the Cantillon or Boon when available in a bar here in Belgium). For those Brothers coming to this side of the pond in these holidays, don't forget to give a yell when in the neighborhood. I'll be honoured to show you around.

In the U.S., Trader Joe's carries Nostradamus Belgian Brown Ale in something like a 20 ounce bottle. It's good stuff, but I can only drink about half of one at a sitting (because I am barely a man when it comes to drinking). Other favorites of mine are Black Toad, Negra Modelo and Champaign Velvet Bock. Life is too short for light and/or cheap beer...

I looked for it were I normally by beer but couldn't find it. Maybe it's not distributed out this way yet.
Brother Paul, I couldn't make it this spring but I'll be there eventually. I still have your old set list but not one for Blue Stuff.

Hmmm.......Guinness Stout......Yea.......Guinness......A yea......yea....no....no.NO.....I mean Spaten Double Optimator! That's it. That's the one. This is real beer!!! You only need one. Well maybe two. Just take that other home wit ya un-opened faw later onn.

Personally I can only handle 1 Guiness an evening.
We played the Thomas Stapleton last weekend and the boss gave me a Conomara whiskey to drink. Yowdelyhow ...GREAT.
I only drank one before set and kept with sparkling water during playing. Though afterwards I enjoyed 1 FULL pint of Kilkenny. I KNOW there are other Irish beers but ...well only that one was available.

My body and my doctor won't let me drink whiskey anymore but if you liked the Conomara try Tullamore Dew. That was my favorite.

I bracheen
A good pour of Tullamore Dew and a couple a three pints of Guiness just about every night for me. Those are two great drinks. But when I go back to Leiden to visit family I love Belgian triples and Lambics.
