For anyone within driving distance of the Bay Area, the World Guitar Show is coming back to the Marin Civic Center in San Rafael the last weekend of July, the 30th & 31st. Buy-sell-trade. Lots & lots of guitars and basses. Many interesting, rare, and vintage instruments. Usually even an Alembic or two. Joe Bob says check it out.

I'm trying to decide if Middle Tennessee is within driving distance of the Bay area. (Please advise!)

It depends on what you're driving and whether you're married! (nyuk, nyuk).

Middle Tennessee is definitely within driving range of the Bay Area.
That said, the Bay Area shows are somewhat under-whelming. Not at all like the shows in Texas. Still, there are pretty things to look at and some deals to be found. Mostly if you're looking for 70's-era Martins and Gibson flat-tops, the occasional 60's Strat or a new-ish Gretsch or Hamer.
I'll be going up and looking around on one of the days, along with my partner and maybe a few old friends. Ya never know whatchamightfind.
(Hell, two years ago, one dealer had an old sort-of Alembic employee bass: vaguely Fender-ish one-piece body, Alembic pups and a primitive home-brew preamp system. I think it may have been Peter Mundy's old DIY beastie. The dealer wanted about $450 for it, which would have been an okay price, but the neck was huge and pretty much unplayable, and the preamp was shot, and I didn't have the money anyway.)
Last year, I almost bought a late-80's Les Paul for $650. Probably should have; it would have saved me a project later this summer, building one for my wife.
Bill - are you going up this year?

Road trip, definitely, but 2000+ miles is a bit far for my tastes (but I keep threatening to take the wife and kids on a lap around the US).
Now, if I were in my Trans Am... let's just say that I can imagine crossing Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona somewhat in excess of the posted speed limit.

Nic:
I usually go both days - Saturday to check it out and find some instruments interesting enough to research in my books and on the net Saturday night. Then back on Sunday to buy if I'm interested. (Last January I picked up an early 60's National Westwood 77 Map guitar, and a Wechter 12 string for a song. Last July I picked up my '83 Electrum). This year I have a wedding to go to on Sunday - out of town - so I'll only be there Sat. morning.

Brad, Be careful crossing Oklahoma in your Trans Am, the State Troopers drive Z-28, but if you ever do make through Oklahoma City we should meet up for food and drinks and a visit

Well, the Bay Area Gutair Show is over. I made it there on Saturday morning and then had to leave town for a few days for a wedding. I did pick up a VERY interesting guitar - probably the finest crafted solid body electric I've ever seen this side of Alembic. The construction owes a huge debt to the folks in Santa Rosa. I'll take some pics and post in the next few days.
