Title: Phil Jones Bass
Post by: thebass on February 22, 2004, 04:29:20 PM
Altough not exactly Alembic related but has anyone ever played an Alembic over Phil Jones Bass equipment ? How does it sound on 5 speakers ? More info can be found here http://www.philjonesbass.com/ (http://www.philjonesbass.com/)

I have not, but having recently seen the 5 cabs, I wonder the same thing.  Anyone ever played or heard one of these cabinets?  With an Alembic?

I have a 2x7 from Phil Jones. I love the way it sound with my Alembic basses. Has a 1.5 driver for the highs instead of a tweeter. Sounds fantastic! If I need some more low end I can use a 1x12 or 1x15. Still get all the clarity from the cab. Thought about getting another cab but I'm pretty happy so far.

+1 on the PJB 2x5.  i pair one of these with a mediocre-sounding m@rk bass 1x15 and it give the whole stack a clean-sounding thump and nice clear mids and highs that is un-mistakeably alembic when ya hear it.  i run this configuriation bi-amped (separately EQ'd 250 watts/cabinet) for the mono basses (shown here with the pretty bass) and full stereo for the SII.  plus it's lightweight, aboot 50 lbs US for the whole shootin match. if ya poke around ya can get one of these for aboot $300 USD.  this cab bears the BeenDown stamp of approval and i highly recommend it for yer bar-hopping needs.

I've got a PJB cabinet that's a 2 x 4 and another that's a 4 x 4.  So that's 24-5 inch speakers powered by a Yamaha amp and run through an SF-2 and a S-1X. Love the sound...plenty of bass, but produces the clarity for which Alembic basses (Sign Deluxe, Series I) are known. More the most part, I'm typically only bringing the 2 x 4 cab with me as the big cabinet is overkill and is really not needed to be heard among an acoustic guitar and banjo/mandolin.

I thought about getting another PJ cab but can't think of reason atm. Maybe one of the front ported cabs? I don't know where I would need the extra volume. Most of my gigs that I need any sort of volume to compete with a drummer I use a 1x12. I have my Bag End system for larger gigs. Wish they sold the 4x7 in the states. That might make a perfect stack.

I just read Phil is selling a 1x7! Maybe that's what I need, a smaller cab?

I currently have 7 pjb cabs and 2 practice amps, 3 heads, an ear box and 2 headphone amps. 2 4x5 piranha, 2 8x5 piranha, 2 8x5 neos and 1 6x5 neo.  I’m ending up in Arizona and selling off a lot of them. Lmk if anything gives you gas. I really like them and the small footprint of the new cabs is great.

A 21 year old necro post?  Count me in!!

I love the Phil Jones 4x5" combo.  The extra cab adds another 200 watts and I've met no one that hasn't been impressed with this tiny bass rig.  It will play the low B on my 5 string.
