Title: Gone sailing
Post by: bob on June 28, 2004, 12:33:29 AM
Just so you don't think I'm ignoring you all, I'll be offline for about three weeks. I leave Tuesday to race a sailboat from San Francisco to Hawaii. Should only take us about 11-12 days, but then we have to hang out and party for a while until everyone else shows up.

Not my boat, but one I've been crewing on for almost ten years, and this will be my fifth Pacific Cup race on this boat (sixth total). I won't say that it's become routine, but I'm pretty relaxed about getting all my personal gear together tomorrow. The biggest question is what the weather will be doing... but we'll find out soon.

At the moment, my major concern is whether I'll have enough time to sit down and play my bass for an hour before we leave (haven't had a chance for almost a week now), and maybe give it a nice lemon oil treatment. I sure hope so.

Great luck and smooth sailing, Bob.  The Pacific Cup, huh?  Not shabby at all!  Sounds like a great time.  Hope the weather's fine and you have a great time.  Look forward to hearing about your trip when you get back.

Yep, that's us. And here's a shot from the 2000 race - fortunately, I 'm a better driver than a bass player...

Bob, you look so serious.  Sounds like a great time.  Good luck with the race and here's to everyone coming home safe and reasonably dry.

And ladies and gentle people Alembicians, our good brother Bob and the Bodacious are taking the lead in their (C) division after 2 days of sailing.
Check the position charts of the C-division on www.pacificcup.org (http://www.pacificcup.org).

Looks like Bodacious finished.  I have no idea how to read the standings, but finished always has a good ring to it.  Congratulations to you Bob!

If I read it right Bodacious finished 5th in Division C
Congratulations Bob

Yes, you read it right - 5th out of 8 in division. We were 2nd in two previous races (once to a boat that shouldn't have been in the same class), so the owner was a bit disappointed, but the rest of us had a generally great time - remarkably pleasant weather and sailing, almost too easy.

As noted, we got off to a great start, but made the fateful decision to go south, and the weather out-smarted the forecasters at that point, giving the northern boats the advantage.

Still, it's pretty amazing to think about the fact that after 12 days of racing, we were only 30 minutes out of 4th place, and another 30 mins out of 3rd. And in retrospect, aside from choosing a different route, there is no obvious way that we could have made up those 30 or 60 minutes...

Got home around midnight, oiled my bass this morning (just to stay on topic), got most of the laundry and grocery shopping out of the way, so I'm looking forward to playing a little after dinner tonight. Aside from fresh vegetables (and maybe a shower...), music is the only thing I really missed about 'real life'.

And given another hour or so, I should finally be caught up on the group - nice to be back.
