The link below will take you to a very old segment of Playboy After Dark, featuring the Dead. Includes a sort of typical Garcia interview spot with Hugh Hefner, and performances of Mountains of the Moon and St. Stephen. Phil is playing the Godfather in its pre-rebirth form, still a stock-looking Starfire. Lots of Alembic custom work under the hood (I believe), but before the G'father got its new top, new headstock and new pu's and electronics.
The clip is very vintage, and the Dead are very young and psychedelic, but the sound ain't bad. Brings back delightful memories...

Thanks for the link. I have noticed before that Jerry made references to a serpent eating it's tail. Then there is the dragon in the Alembic logo looking like it is eating it's tail. Any connection here? Sorry this may have been talked about before, but I am not a deadhead.

Sorry - double post.

Cool Bill, thanks. I've heard about this session - never seen any of it. Reports are that the boys dosed everyone in the room, including Hefner. And how 'bout Pig on percussion. =)

If you come across the PBS dvd post a link. That's one I'd be very interested in obtaining.

I think I remember that PBS show.. A Night with the Jefferson Airplane and Friends at the Winterland. There's a great jam at the end with members of the Airplane, Santana, and the Dead onstage. I seem to remember Quicksilver being in on the show as well.
I too would love a link as I haven't seen that show in probably 33 years.

I've seen the Playboy After Dark stuff before...I think on the Playboy Channel. I vaguely remember a third song as well, but can't for the life of me think of what it was.
I'd be interested in that PBS vid as well...c'mon Flax: what's the title?

The PBS (NET) show was A Night At The Family Dog recorded in Feb. of 1970 with 2 Airplane tunes, 2 Santana tunes, and 3 Dead tunes. Produced by Ralph Gleason. Jack is playing an Alembic modified Guild Starfire and takes a solo during Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil. That cut is included in Fly Jefferson Airplane. I remember this show being Hot S@#t. There was a second show (part 2) called Go Ride The Music.
I love inet searching...
