Title: Just the bass please...
Post by: spliffy on January 30, 2006, 11:50:25 AM
I love watching the second Disk from the Who's The Kids Are Alright DVD, where for a couple of songs, the camera is aimed at John and the sound is isolating Bass only. Now I know that this is standard pre-editing practice for concerts, but does anyone know if there are other DVDs where this fascinating feature exists? I love the camera angle option too... just makes sense with today's DVD technology.
let me know.

I too enjoy that aspect of the disk. I noticed there is a slight bleed through of the others' sounds coming through onto the audio feed. Is this being picked up by the PU's on John's bass?

Though I am not one of the fortunate peoples to own the DVD, I would imagine it's coming through the mics on his amp(s), assuming he mic'd his high-end.  If he's singing and/or the Ox Cam also has his mic feed open, it's likely also coming through that.  It would have to be *painfully* loud on stage to get anything to vibrate the bass enough to come through at an audible level.  I've gotta get that disk!

Of course! the ambient noises picked by the mic on his amp........

Those two songs alone are worth the price of admission!! It's a must have.

Another interesting case of Entwistle mic-bleed is the King Buscuit Flout Hour CD of his solo band show in Philly in '75. This was just before he switched to Alembics on stage - he puts his Fenderbird (custom thick Thunderbird body with Precision neck) through astonishing paces, and the overall sound is very unique. In the interview at the end, longtime Who soundman Bobby Pridden talks about how the dreaded mic bleed actually makes for a very interesting sound in this case.

Don't let the packaging fool you - the pic of John with his Spyder has nothing to do with the show. It's definitely the 'Bird.
