Maybe some of you RTF fans can help me out; what kind of rig did stanley use when he was with RTF? Thanks!

Thanks Jacko. I looked around at all the older pictures I could find of Stanley and RTF, but no good ones of his setup. I was thinking of buying the Live in Montreaux (sp?) DVD..that'd probably have some good shots. Plus, it'd be a kick ass dvd :-p

If my old feeble memory is correct he used JBL's somewhere in the 70's. I recall seeing what looked like 15 Hard Trucker style cabinets. I also seem to recall reading something about Altec-Lansing. I  don't know what he has for preamps and amps.  
 
I also remember seeing him use Carvin gear during the School Days tour. He was a Carvin endorser for awhile.

The top unit in the rack appears to be an Eventide Flanger, first released in 1976.
 
If you look at the pic I posted in the Artists showcase during Stanley's School Days tour, at that gig he was using an F2-B, Eventide Flanger and a Harmonizer underneath it, unknown amp, then a Crown amp into a single 15 JBL long throw cab and a MusicMan 2x12 combo.
 
Upon further review of my pics, there appears to be another cabinet behind the rack, and let's not forget the venerable Roland tape echo.

The bottom cabs behind him appear to be Karlsons.  He played sets of 2 and 4 of these unique designs.  I used to own one and loved it.  They have the smoothest response across the spectrum but are heavier than lead, because of extra wood in their construction.

That horn design is similar to what I remember the Klipsch horn being. I never owned a set, but always lusted after them in my youthful, Stereo Review reading days.

Hey Mike:  That's a blast from the deep past!  They were really exotic-looking, and not unpopular among the hifi enthusiasts.  But once they are scaled up to bass cab-size they get really heavy.  Too bad, too - the sound is very good.  The theory (if I remember it right) is that Karlsons avoid the ported-box problem of having only one tuned freq by having a variable sized port in the form of the tapered wings.  Acoustic made a combo bass amp that was a Karlson design, too:

When I saw Stanley in 1982, he was using EV speakers, I think 3 way cabs that at the time were being touted for their midrange drivers being something special in all the ads.

According to the article, he has (from the top) an Eventide Flanger,2 Alembic pre-amps, 2 Alembic power modules, A JBL crossover,and a mixer. Power amps are Crown and a Phase Linear power amp.  Cabinets, as already noted are a carlson design made by Sound Plus,washington DC and the plexiglass dome has 24 C.T.S. 4.5 inch speakers.

That dome is trippy.  Anyone know how it sounded?  It sure looks cool.

Back in the 70s my dad knew a bass player who used the classic Bose cabinet with lots of small speakers - firing from the back, IIRC.

The bass player from Spyrogyra used to endorse Bose as well. I'm trying to remember if the whole band wasn't going thru them in the ads (yeah, it's gotta be real! It's in a PICTURE! - lol)

I'm also intrigued - the usual tuned port in a bass reflex cab is a plastic tube, so why can't those 'curtains' of the Karlson box be made out of plastic too? I can see how it works if they are part of the structure, but why would they need to be?

They could be.  In fact, the Karlson hobbyist/fanatic website (http://home.planet.nl/~ulfman/ (http://home.planet.nl/~ulfman/))used to have an article with plans so you can make a Karlson stereo speaker from cardboard.
