Rock and ROLL!

I also spotted G.E. Smith (I always liked him) and Duck Dunn back there I think.

Oh JOHNNY!

Yeah yeah, yeah yeah!  That was from the Dylan tribute concert (Neil Young dubbed it Bobfest); Booker T. and the MGs were the house band.  I just found out it's available on DVD--my wife is excited because, unlike the CD version of the show, the DVD includes Sophie B. Hawkins (yikes!) doing what I call her little striptease version of whatever Dylan song it was she sang.

There MUST be something better than slide guitar . . . I just can't think of anything right now.

Used to play with a truly terrifying slide player who played one of those 3-pickup ASATs with a spark-plug socket as a slide.  Just wonderful, and ASATs would cut through anything.

I grew up in Beaumont, Texas, several years behind Edgar and Johnny.  I always used to get their schoolbooks as our names ended commonly in 'W'.  I'll never forget seeing Johnny walking through downtown one day in the late 60s in a purple tye-dye jumpsuit and that white hair in a ponytail down to his waist . . . 'normal' people were just parting on the sidewalk like the Red Sea.  This was the summer after he'd scored big with Johnny Winter And on Columbia, he was a BIG deal.  Though my favorite iteration was Edgar's White Trash horn band where Johnny and Rick Derringer were frequent participants.  Lots of Boogie Kings, BarKays, influence, with that unique Texas/Louisiana blend of TBone meets The Meters.

Just thinking about White Trash, that whole end of things . . . DAMN I'm stranded in a ProTools, can't sing, can't play, can't make a crowd dance, sampled, looped, quantized, digital world!

Ok . . . I feel better.

I've always felt that if someone wanted to learn how to play the blues, they should listen to Johnny.

I have a memory from the summer of '73.  I was visiting with a couple friends who were both very good guitar players, and we were listening to Johnny Winter And.  Both of these guys were fingering along with the record.  I think they knew every lick on the album.
