Did anyone happen to catch Mythbusters this week?
The essentially made a diesel powered subwoofer in an attempt to blow the windows out of a car.
16hz at 163db. Take THAT Phil hee hee.
-
My name is Mike and I'm a Mythbusters Junkie. What the diameter of that thing, four feet?
-
My name is Olie and I am an Alembiholic!
Did they succeed?
-
No they popped the sunroof out and it lost seal. It was really cool to see though.
-
Um what I mean to say, is the sunroof popped from the extreme pressure from the subwoofer, and it lost seal. Accept my pre-apologies for the ambiguity!

Mechanically linked to the driveshaft, It plays three tunes: 1st gear; 2nd gear; and 3rd
misquote of the day: I reject your Fender bass prejudice and substitute my Epic
I've seen an episode or two.

it looked like an out of control trampoline with no one on it, quite the scary ride
-
I have a nephew with a Ford Aspire that has the rear seat removed and 4 15's and 2 18's in place of the rear seat. I've ssen him bounce around in it a few times.

Isn't that a great show. Would that not be a good job to have ?
-
163dB is some serious pressure, especially at 16Hz.
That would homogenize your internal organs, and you could really forget ever hearing again.
It would cause hearing damage even with a good pair of earmuffs.

Want loud? The dB at the floor of Launch Complex 39A @ 00:01 in the take off of the Space Shuttle is around 250dB ! ! They routinely have to replace some of the 40ft-thick concrete pad after every launch.

Two hundred decibels will kill you. Two hundred fifty is just a stunning (literally and figuratively) amount of energy.
In the 60's NASA built plans for a rocket that basically detonated a series of nuc-u-lar (I've given up on trying to pronounce it properly!) bombs to put it in orbit.
Bang!

Amazing to see John Meyer on 'MythBusters' for some of their audio-based experiments (the Brown Note, etc.).

that was the coolest thing I've seen in a while...it's diameter was 51,
...someone should post the vid (and add a soundtrack)...
If they had used a car w/out a sunroof ,
I wonder if they could of blown out the windows, I hear the old VW beetles had a tight seal.
-
Is there room for a 51 speaker ANYWHERE inside a Beetle???
-
There might be, the Mythbuster's way. They removed all the seats and converted the interior of the car into one giant, upward facing, speaker. Very cool episode.

My Bass player and I finally got a chance to verbally discuss and dissect the woofer. We are currently writing Adam and Jamie because we feel their design was flawed, causing the speaker cone to oscillate with the drive shaft (note how the edges of the cone move back and forth) and not correctly reproducing the linear in and out motion of a speaker.
So, that in addition to welding the sunroof closed, would produce a more accurate result. In our opinions anyway. ;)
It was surprising to realize that, since Adam and Jamie have observed up close how speakers move at low frequencies (The Brown Note episode with John Meyer).

Check here for John Meyer's comments on the Brown Note episode. (http://www.meyersound.com.au/brownnote.shtm target=_blank)

Well, it seems that many people felt the same about the design flaws of the subwoofer. Maybe we'll get a revisit!
The Mythbusters have done work with Meyer sound (Duck Quack, Brown note, and Shattered Crystal), and also have done some stuff at KPFA. Seems there is a 2nd degree of separation from Grateful Dead, Alembic family there.
Look what I found, the Mica cabinet! What's next, the Meyer guitar? LOL just kidding but here is the link.
