Title: Election Day
Post by: mica on November 06, 2006, 07:01:56 PM
Just a quick note to let you know that my dad and I will be working at the polls tomorrow, so neither one of us will be available. It's also Valentino's day off, so we'll be running at half-office staff until Wednesday.

Thanks for the public service work, Mica. Poll workers in precincts all over our country do necessary and important work. I also hope everyone took the time to vote.

Forgive my ignorance of USA politics but what are the mid term elections all about then?

JV,
The mid-term refers to a non-presidential election. This one has the whole House of Representetives up for re-election, a portion of the Senate and many state and local government elections. At the US level this election can/will effect the controlling party in Congress. The results will have a large impact on Bush's last two years in office.

I think Ron should design a voting machine--he could make one that would actually work!

Ha Kent! If you voted at a polling place, you probably saw the Disabled Access Unit (DAU) for electronic voting that is required by federal law. I have yet to see a voter use these machines (the county bought 400 or so of them), although I understand they did get a little use at other polling places.

It was a long day, about 16 hours. But I actually think it's fun and a great way to meet the people in your community (at least the ones that vote!). And at least I know in one precinct in the country there will be no shenanigans

Great comback Mike,We did have a pinball machine and a pac-man at our firehouse polling station, as for the electronic machines Mica, a local voter put his fist through one because in would not vote his way and had to watch the results from a jail cell                                                                                                                                          chuck

JV asked what are the mid term elections all about.

I was going to say something like judging from the television commercials and robocalls, the midterm elections are about spending millions and millions and millions of dollars to say crass, crude and patently false things to very large numbers of people about candidates of the opposing party, but then I remembered that the moderator doesn't like for us to talk about politics; so the midterm elections are all about what Keith said.

By the way, the Nevada initiative that was discussed in an earlier thread went up in smoke.  So those of you who were booking your next vacation will have to make other plans.

Ha, ha, he said up in smoke.

I thought it was a dope-y initiative anyway.

I thought for certain the puns would start rolling.  They usually sprout like weeds.

Oh well.

I guess that I'll just leave you with a quote from Sir Winston Churchill:

It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried.

Bradley, you really need to weed out those sprouts. Young kids to this day really hate them.
