Title: Water water most everywhere

I realize this is a trifle compared to what others experienced before but I woke up in my basement studio and swung my feet into a 3 to 4 inch puddle. (actually the entire basement area was covered) Luckily, the power was off otherwise it would have been a fatal rising. My non walled Alembics were in a warwick rack and were high enough to escape harm but a couple of instruments got a bit wet. Couch, carpet, furniture and about 20 guitar cases are under review. I was relieved that AKG makes great cases for their mics because my $1000 tube mic was nice and dry. I didn't check my S&W pistol yet. My school district is the only one in our county open today so I'll have to take care of it this afternoon.  So a wet-vac-ing I will go. Hopefully the water hasn't risen while I am away for the day. Amazing how water seeks its own level through a concrete foundation!  
Times like these you have to count your blessings and know that others are worse off than you.

Danno.
Sorry to here of your problem.I have had the same thing happen to me several times in my basement rec area.
I solved the problem by installing a small sump pump in the corner of my basement.In case of power failure there is also a backup marine automatic bildge pump in the same hole hooked to a auto battery and trickel charger.Its a very easy do it yourself project and not expensive.Hope this helps you out.

Chuck I admire your self-reliant pioneer spirit.
This has never ever happened before. I've been there 44 years and my Dad never had it happen 6 years before I showed up.  
Them French drains is lookin' better and better.

Basements definitely suck from time to time.  I hope you lose nothing irreplaceable and that the rest is insured.

Hey Danno,
 
I had my basement done with an underfloor gutter system.  Basically an indoor French drain.  This leads to my sump pump which also has a battery operated backup sump in case of power loss.
The whole thing cost about $6K but my piece of mind is well worth it.  Plus it's guaranteed for the life of the house!!!!!!!

Danno, glad it wasn't worse. I bet that was a shock to step out of bed.
You can say warm and fuzzy. Doomtree/warm and fuzzy.  It is a perfect fit.

Sorry to hear about your flood.  While some floods are good (Wake of the Flood - Grateful Dead; Before the Flood - Dylan & The Band; Curt Flood - reserve clause), water on the floor with you stuff sitting in it ain't one of 'em.  When I was in college at Berkeley I was living in a basement room that flooded.  Unfortunately, I was in New York at the time and my stuff sat in a couple of inches of water for a week.  Luckily I was but a poor student  with no Alembics.  My major loss was my LP collection in an orange crate.  At least you were there to take necessary steps.  Hope it all works out without too much hassle and minimal damage.

Its looking like a week long battle. My good brother brought over a sump pump and we got most of the water out in about 4 hours. The water insists on creeping back in through the floor in 2 spots. I've moved all the instruments to the first floor and looking ahead to another bout in a few hours. Dean you are a wise man. My brother had it done and he faired very well. I suppose the cases will dry out over time and i guess the basses wanted a change of venue for a bit. Folks in neighboring towns got creamed so I can't really complain. All in all, I'm a lucky sod. Thanks for your kind words and stories.

Sorry to hear of your problem. At least you were home to deal and cope, being on the road could have been a collector's nightmare!

Hang in there brother.  I know what it is like to have water attack everything you own.  Just take things one day at a time.  Keep that mould away.  My prayers are with you.

Danno; sorry to hear about the flood.  And yes, you are right; a lot of people have been dealing with flood waters in the Northeast US this past week.  Our hearts go out to all.

Sorry to hear about the water Danno but am happy that most was unharmed. We don't have basements in most houses in Texas, (too much limestone under the dirt), so I have never experienced such a delima.  
Good thing the juice was off, an electrified-Danno would not be a good thing.

Thanks for the kind works and concerns. My guardian Angel must be a pro wrestler / ultimate fighter because after Iugged 19 instrument cases to the garage to dry out I looked at my Alembic/Acme rig and the cord was still plugged into the ext cord in the wall and it had corrosion on the plug when I unplugged it. So dat sucker was live and dangling at some point in the H2O! So learn from my folly, put yer cases up off the floor and use wall hangers whenever available. Now to buy a case of carpet fresh!
