did some searching on the web and found bass emporium very competitive
5 string flats 59$ +4.25 ship
4's 40$

To my surprise my Orion and a set of TI Jazz flats didn't match my taste and expectations at all.
My Yamaha BB1000S sounds wonderful with them though...

I've got TI Jazz Flats on a fretless Excel and love 'em! I've got Jazz Rounds on my Mark King Deluxe, a FrankenJazz fretless and an old Rickenbacker and love those, also. Those Bass Emporium prices look excellent indeed!

i like em both
the flats seem a little thin on the g string
the rounds are very comp to the ddarrio chromes
but the tension is lower

Interested in your comment, I got out one bass with flats on it and one with rounds. The sets did feel a little different. I went to juststrings.com and sure enough, the flats have a slightly larger diameter on the D, A and E strings. The G's are the same, both sets. I guess that accounts for the G feeling smaller on the flats, cause it's actually the same size. Weird. Whatever, they are great strings.  
 
I played D'Addarios for about ten years, but I never tried the Chromes. Might have to sometime.

chromes are excelleny strings for rock
not as smooth as ti flats- nothing are....
but soundwise very very nice
higher tension than the ti';s so you will probably need to reset the neck
at 40bucks a set- well worth a try
think they are better than the power bass

I play a Rogue 5 with Chromes.  Very very full & fat sound.  
 
I've just restrung the chromes after playing a set of DR Sunbeams (they're nice too if you haven't tried them).

Thanks for your comments, as well. I'll have to check out the Chromes for sure. I've become spoiled by the lower tension TI's, so I may get another set of those. I'm L A Z Y!
 
As far as the Elan, well, it's not a give-away, but it will be making an appearance in the For Sale $ Trade area, later today, or tomorrow. I've got to get some good pictures of it and determine a price. You can have first dibs! LOL

Blast you my friend!  I am sooo in love with that Elan, yet not quite in a position to do anything about it.  My wife and I are selling up and moving back to San Diego in July (bought our Qantas tickets last night).
 
I've got a house, two cars and everything that plugs into the wall to sell.  2 months from now and I'd have been knocking down your door.
 
Good luck with the sale and you know I'll be following it VERY closely.

the gig went fine and i came home and took off the power basses and went back to chrome for a bit
i have a set of ti flats to retry

I've strung one of my jazzes w/ Dean Markley's flats. In order to keep the 1.05 & .85 gauges their set w/those E & A's are only offered w/ .50(g) & .70(d). This is my first set of flats & I must say that with the Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder p/ups these are very full sounding. That Jamerson sound is right there(bridge p/up off and tone knob rolled off of course). Upper register playing seems to have more prescence, definitely louder than my round wounds. What's great about them is that I've had them on for about 8 months and it's the same tone from when I put them on. I would've tried the other brands mentioned here but I've got a deal w/ Dean Markley, so when you can get'em cheap......get'em! What's so special about T.I.'s though. Don't want to sound ignorant, but I'm thinking that when you grind a string down, you would achieve the same the type of string, no matter what brand.  
I'm fielding opinions now.

smooth silky feel and sound. has a bit of upright sound to my ear
very low tension so they feel like butter
my only gripe is the g string sounds a little thin
the cores may be different too
