I love my Alembics (as do we all), but there's just something about a Les Paul. Neck pickup on...smooth, woman-like tone, whatever you want to call it...just can't be beat. And no matter how hard I try, i can't get the Alembics to sound remotely like it.
I've got an R7 and R0 and have been searching a long time for the perfect R9. This one is as close as I've gotten - wonderful color (not too red or yellow), great flame (not perfect bookmatch) and just the right amount of background grain. If it only had a few mineral flecks, it'd be the Holy grail for me...but I'll settle for 3 out of 4.
I'll have her in my hands next week.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
-
I had one just like it but sold it about 6 years ago along with my original Gold Top. Still kickin' myself for that one.

That is a lovely instrument, with what would appear to be lots of personality!

Thanks guys.
Yeah, John, it does seem to have an old soul.

Congrats, on the Les Paul! While I'd love to have an Alembic guitar to go with my 2 basses, I've been the proud owner of a beautiful black/silver sunburst Les Paul custom since I bought it over 25 years ago! It sounds great -though I never use the tone controls, which I consider virtually useless.
Otherwise, it's a great looking, great sounding guitar. Yours looks like a great beauty -play it in good health!

Happy birthday Jonathan. I wish I was forty anything! :-)
The nice thing about a lester is that you can bring your whole left hand around front and play it, because it just sits there!

Though I am an unrepentant Strat guy, I have to admit this one sure looks purdy. What year is it? Enjoy and Happy B-day Jonathan! Personally, I never did turn 40. I spent a year celebrating the first anniversary of my 39th and then went straight to 41.
(Ancient history is soooo interesting. hehehehe).

What a nice present. Everytime I see something like that or one of Bill's cool & unusual guitars it makes me want to learn to play one. Then I remember how much trouble I have with only four strings. Four BIG strings.
Congratulatins and Happy Birthday.

Bill,
I have one of those Stratocaster or whatever you call 'em things, too. Unfortunately, my fingers get all retarded as soon as they hit the fretboard. I simply cannot play a Strat...don't know why.
