that's sick, and I bet he can't stay in a band,

maybe 15-20 years ago, nowadays most guitarists I see are pretty lame ducks. They look like a fence post with a tool strapped around them and play like it too!
I do agree about him probably not being able to stay in a band. Guys like this tend to do their own thing(in ways I can't blame them) or practice so much they don't ever get in a band.

He does have some good chops. I'd like to hear him in a band setting.

Reminds me of a drummer we had back in the 90's. He played and AWESOME solo, but man was his timing terrible. He always seemed to veer toward the same tempo. The slow tunes would speed up and the fast ones would slow down.

John Lennon oncesaid to Tony Levin 'You won't play loads of notes will you??'
Less is more but that was fun to watch, I agree with artswork99..need to see the other hand too.
With 6 strings I guess you have to use them all at some point.
Still awesome..wish I could do it(envy envy)

The cat is good, no doubt about it.

That's what I like about youtube, cats you would've never even heard of before can be heard around the world.

I enjoyed both videos, thanks Keavin and Dave.

---- WANKER

And No, for the record, I certainly cannot play any better.  But I still say he is a wanker.

Here are the best two hands I've seen in some time.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6c1Z8RTx_w (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6c1Z8RTx_w)

You know it doesn't matter if you can play a zillion notes a second or one..as long as you are playing what you want.

It would be nice to hear how he plays when he's not giving a lesson/demonstration.  Incredible chops and mastery of the physical instrument, for sure, but I don't think either of these videos is meant to capture the essence of his musicianship (which may or may not be very listenable).

I have said it before and I will say it again..simple lines played well, and with a nice tone, are just as good as bass gymnastics!!

There are sssssso many guys people out there nowadays playing with incredible chops and I am absolutly fine with that. Good luck to them.

Personally speaking though..I get really bored listening to this kind of stuff for more than ten minutes! I would much rather listen to someone like Jimmy Johnson playing tastefully within a band, but thats just my opinion!

Me too.  We don't know that this guy doesn't lay down a groove when he's playing in a band setting.  Jimmy Johnson can be equally technically incredible, and if he were posting vids on youtube as an unknown (and similar context) I would hope to see some of those fireworks.

I enjoyed the comping with chords from the link Dave posted.  In a small group setting (bass, drums, piano, or bass, drums and sax, for instance), some of this is not bad.  Not my thing by any stretch of the imagination, but not inherently bad.

Let's not crucify this guy just because his fingers fly with accuracy..  ;)

John; here (http://www.alessandroserri.it/pagine_web/discografia/the_ancient.htm) he is in a different setting.

Yes, thats great Dave! I like that.

Im not disrespecting him or saying he cant lay down a groove or fit into a band sceanario..for me I just prefer listening to him doing his thing in the band!

Its all about the music for me. I posted a discussion a while back on the forum..Technique versus feel and I guess I summed up my point of view by saying whos music touched more people, Steve Vai or John Lennon?

That sums it up for me. I have to say though that brilliance and touching compositions can be married together. I cant think of anyone elses compositions that touch me more than Allan Holdsworth! Technique and feel blended perfectly!
