Title: Let's discuss Envelope Filters...
Post by: jx2638 on December 13, 2008, 07:07:37 PM
I'm currently running my Tribute through an Electro-Harmonix Mini Q Tron Envelope.  I like the 3 stage switch that allows focus on low, mid, or high but am wondering what else is out there and easy to use.  Would love any insight.
Thanks.

Jim:

After researching (check out harmony-central.com for user reviews) and /or trying several different envelope filters, I settled on the E-H Micro Q tron.  I love the sound and it seems to work well with my Alembics.  Really nails the Jerry Estimated Prophet tone.

I had the larger Q-Tron for awhile - good tone but the volume boost bugged me.  It no longer works properly so I picked up an MXR - simple and sounds pretty good.

The Maxon AF-9 is pretty good too.  It's what I used until I found the Q tron.  Then I sold the Maxon here to a club member.

I also like the BOSS AW-3 Dynamic Wah. Besides the regular Envelope filter features, it also has a Humanizer feature that replicates vowels at each end of the note.  Really cool stuff!  I also really like the EBS BASS IQ.

You should have come to Bassday John. He played a superb set. Twice in 2 years - maybe he'll come back next year.

I have a EH Mini Q Tron and Bass Balls..the Q is mainly for guitar and is more subtle.
The Bass Balls is very extreme and you can imitate the synth intro to 'Birdland' when you switch in the distortion.

I'm sharing the same issue as Stamieus...too much volume boost on the Electro-Harmonix Mini Q Tron.

I love my BassBalls! Yeah, it's extreme... especially with the distortion, but I've never heard another effect like it. I don't like volume drop it affords, so I keep it in a dedicated loop on my Radial Switchbone so I can have a true bypass when the BassBalls is not needed.

It's not simple, and it's not for anyone who needs to make the exact same effect again and again, but the Subdecay Prometheus is a truly exceptional filtering tool. I'm enthralled. It can sound like a typical autowah, or many crazed variations.

I love my Mu-Tron III. Jerry used one and Kimock calls it his Secret F***ing Weapon. Not a modern pedal but nothing I've tried sounds like it. Closest things are the various Q Trons.
