Title: Practice books?

Happy new year, everyone!
 
Could anyone recommend some practice/technique books to me, in the vein of funk and slap style?

There was a thing called The Slap Bass Program With Alexis Slarevski that was available on video and a good basic-intermediate level trainer.  Vic Wooten's stuff shows some advanced techniques.  There are also plenty of lessons available through Youtube as well as some other online stuff.  Slap really lends itself to good video more than a book because so much of it is about getting the technique right rather than just hitting the notes.
 
Rocco Prestia had a good funk video out as well.  No one is more funky than TOP.  It's interesting because his style differs so much from the typical and works so well.
 
People learn in different ways, so the best bet is to look at a bunch of alternative things and see what sticks to your brain.

Greg is right on, start playing that way. Only thing I can add is , start listening to more funk.
You'll probably find that the fast slap is easier to make sound good than the slower chops.
Cool thing about slap is, NO one way is right. What ever works for you AND sounds good IS right.

Youtube is a good place to start - loads of instructional videos posted there on the slap funk style from the very basics up to fast triplets etc!
 
Try searching out the now ancient hotlicks instructional video of Louis Johnson on ebay etc...I liked his style on that very much - pure funk! I have a copy on vcr!

I have The Slap Bass Program With Alexis Slarevski that Bob referred to.  I'm learning some new techniques/approaches.  It's advanced enough that there is probably something there for everyone, but not so difficult that you would give-up after 10 minutes.  You can find several of the lessons on YouTube.  Check them out before you buy (the cheapest I found the DVD was $45).  On a related topic... is there any way to set-up a loop on Windows Media Player (Alexis moves along pretty quickly).

I know you can set a track to repeat, it should be one of the buttons on the interface. If you can't find it there I would look in one of the drop down menus, it shouldn't be too hard to find.
