Title: How many instruments do you have?
Post by: glocke on December 16, 2008, 03:29:15 AM
Just curious as to what other people have....and how often they get played...

Here are mine in order of how often they get played.

SCSD
Series I LS
72 jazz  (all original with lots of lovin showing)
64 jazz (paint refin, but otherwise original)

Guitars:
Alembic Skylark
taylor acoustic (forget which one).

Out of all of those expensive instruments the Alembics (except for the skylark), are the only ones that get any real playing/gig time.

If I sold everything elsebut the SCSD and SI, I could more than likely pay for the custom series II Ive always wanted (which prior to the stock market crash was going to be paid for with a loan from my 401k), but I know Id regret selling them...

That's a good topic at the end of the year. Time for inventory. I have 5 basses:

Warwick Thumb from 1987 (a very early one)
Warwick Thumb Jack Bruce sign. 1990
Fender Precision 1966
Framus Caravelle 1969
Alembic Series I 1976

... and 1 Chapman Stick.

I mainly play the Warwick Thumb. I think the reason therfore is that I play this Bass for so many years so we are best familiarized.

Here goes nuthin':

Guitars:

Heritage Golden Eagle ('02, blonde, upgraded wood package, modded, custom THG knobs, custom electrics w/Lindy Fralin SC floater)
Guild Artist Award ('78, blonde, d'Armond floater)
Fender '62 VRI Stratocaster (Smith, 3-color SB,  ca. '83-'84)
Gibson CS Les Paul Elegant (AAA flametop, chambered body, abalone inlays)
Fender Custom-Color Stratocaster (Smith, pewter, tremolo, chrome h/w, Rosewood f/b, white p/g, '82)
Guild F-212 Black (lacquer, 12str. acoustic '81)
Guild D-5M (Mahogany, 6str. acoustic ca, '87)
Charvel/Jackson Model 4 (Blue Metallic, Active Jacskon S/S/H electronics, Jackson/Floyd w/locking whammy, shark-tooth inlays, ca. '88)
Charvel Jackson Model 4 (Pearl White now yellow , Active Jacskon S/S/H electronics, Jackson/Floyd w/locking whammy, shark-tooth inlays, ca '88)

Basses:

Alembic Orion LS iV (Troy's Custom Orion '05)
Alembic Series I LS iV (THG custom knobs, '05)
Alembic Orion iV (K(evi)n's Custom Orion '04)

All were bought new (exc. the Heritage GE, Guild AA, Fender VRI, and Troy's CO)

I mostly play the Heritage jazz box...been studying Jazz guitar with a master for the last five of thiry years playing. The Guild AA is expensive and I use it as a back-up.

I double on bass (second instrument) and mostly use the Troy's Custom Orion as it's the cheaperst, most durable one. The SI is heavy, ridiculously long-scaled (played standing w/strap, 1st position is a stretch-and-a-half....and I'm a six-footer!) not to mention more delicate, more expensive and more finicky...series electrics w/outboard PS...then add F-2B and SF-2, LOL!. My Custom Orion has the breathe-on-it-and-it-scratches 22k gold plating on the hardware and all plates, so it gets played the least. The gold looks nice, but it was a mistake...TOOOO delicate.

Good thing I bought a house this year, becasue I'd probably have bought more....it's a sickness. I can't play all the instruments I have and just maintaining them is an expensive and time-consuming store. I could and probably should sell most of 'em, but can't bring myself to part with any of 'em. Any half-way decent guitar I've ever owned in thirty years I still have.

Cheers,

Kevin

I've got my custom Series (The Dragonfly), an older Modulus Quantum 5, a D'Armond Starfire with Dark Star pickups, Alembic-style bridge and tailpiece, and Pyramid flats, and a G&L SB-2 that I rewired to stereo.

The Dragonfly gets played the most, now.  I've gigged with the Modulus a few times since D-fly showed up, and I've recorded with the Starfire...it goes on tape REALLY well (I guess it isn't tape anymore, though), especially through a tube amp.

The SI is heavy, ridiculously long-scaled

I feel the same way about mine...Sounds great though, but IF I ever get my custom series II made, it will be a medium scale, if not a short scale...

Here's what I have in order of how often they get played...

MKSD 4 (just got it)
Fretless Excel 4
Tie - Essence 4, Surine Esprit 4
Carvin CL450 (classical/electric)
Carvin 4 (LB70P)
Carvin 6 (LB76W)
Carvin guitar (DC400)
Fender Geddy Lee JB
Contreras classical guitar
Vose baby grand piano

The first 3 or 4 on the list get played just about everyday. The ones on the bottom hardly ever get played. I've been working on a master's degree for the past 3-1/2 years and that's been taking all of my time. I'll be done this summer. At that time I'd like to get back on the piano more... and I'll start jamming with my friends again... and I'd like to get my car back on the track... and then I'll be back to not having any time again! But it will be more fun.

Here's my current wish list...
Fretless 5
Fretted 5
Short-scale fretless
Thin neck 6-string bass

And a better amp/preamp/cab!

Mike

Basses
Alembic Excel 5
Fender Jazz Bass American Standard V

Guitars
Fender '62 Reissue Jazzmaster

The Excel gets played more than anything else but there's nothing like the thump of a passive Jazz bass.

My list:

Alembic Rogue V ('03)
Warwick Thumb V ('96)
Warwick Corvette proline V ('93)
Warwick Streamer SS1 IV ('93)
Musicman Stingray IV ('87)
Status 3000 IV ('88)customised SII circuit
Fender jazz V f/less (m.i.m '98)
Crafter acoustic V ('01)

Yamaha Pacifica Guitar (forget the model # but has an unusual maple neck & fingerboard)

The Alembic & Warwicks are my main gigging basses, with the Alembic being my #1 choice for function work because of its versatility but for my Rockband i use the Warwick V's.
The Status got an airing the other weekend because the function band wanted to resurect a couple of old Level 42 numbers. The MM is pretty 'beat' but that just adds 'mojo' when i fancy a change of tone.

I think I have a tambourine and a few other percussion items lying about somewhere!

Well shoot...you can never have to much money, my wife is way understanding, and I don't have children- not by choice... that's the real biggie, in my humble opinion. So here goes:

Basses
Sig Std 5 w/upgrades
Sig Std short scale w/upgrades
Custom 4
Distillate/Exploiter
Fender American Deluxe Jazz 4
Fender American Deluxe Jazz 5
Fender CS Jaco Tribute
Fender CS 55 P relic
Fender CS 59 P custom
Fender Stu Hamm Urge I
Ibanez Muscian fretless
Ibanez Bean Bass
Lakland US Joe Osborn
Sadowsky Standard 5 w/Cocobolo top
Spector NS2 w/spalted maple top
Tobias Classic 5
Fodera VW 4, on order
Sadowsky Vintage J, on order

Guitars
Brian Moore C90P
Brian Moore C90P.13
Brian Moore C90TP.13
Fender CS Strat
Fender CS Relic Strat
Fender CS Relic Tele
Gibson Johnny A
Gibson CS LP Jr.
Gibson CS LP R9
Ibanez 2681 Bob Weir model
Ovation Al Dimeola acoustic
PRS Custom 22
Washburn CS Jennifer Batten JB100
Yamaha Pacifica MS1511

I think that's it, except for a couple of Warmoth bass and guitars I have put together.
Right now, I go back and forth between the Sig 5 and the Sadowsky 5. Both just awesome instruments.

And yes, it is a sickness...

Let's see, I think I'll just list the ones I have here with me in CA:

Alembic '75 Series I doubleneck
Alembic '03 Stanley Clarke Signature Standard 5-string
Fender Japan Bass VI reissue
Gibson early-'70s Les Paul Triumph Bass
GIbson '68 Melody Maker Bass Pelham Blue
Guild '67 Starfire I Bass
Ibanez SR506 6-string
Rickenbacker '76 4001 Autumnglo
Rickenbacker '82 4008 Fireglo 8-string

Fender Japan '70s Stratocaster reissue

It's kind of a lot, but they aren't too redundant. I'm going to be moving soon, and if we get the house that we are trying to buy then we will have less space than I currently have. There are only a couple of basses on the wish list:

I want a fretless, either an Alembic or a Ric though I'm open to something else if it's interesting
I would love a small body, short scale, '70s Alembic
An 8-string Alembic

But for the time being I'm content! When space and money become an issue it becomes easier to get over GAS. What do you folks with 10+ guitars do with the ones you're not using?

Will, the Surine is a great bass. I'll probably get another one some day. For overall sound and quality I'd put it between Carvin and Alembic. It's pretty versatile, I can get a lot of sounds out of it. But I wish the Bartolini's were hard-mounted like the Alembic pickups. It's Amboyna Burl with Mahogany.

Have had a bunch over the years, but here's what I've kept, in order of purchase:

1979 John Gray custom 4 natural Bubinga - my first custom, it still sounds great, I mostly use it for recording, but play it occasionally

1992 Peavey DynaBass 5 gray - my first 5str, bought to see if I liked 5's, it's my emergency bass staying at church, played rarely

1993 Tobias Standard 5F natural maple - a nice fretless with an acrylic fretboard, played occasionally for fun

1975 Fender Precision natural ash - the maple fretboard with original flatwound Fender strings give this a really punchy sound, my wife (the piano player) loves the sound of this one

1992 Modulus Quantum 6 natural maple - until the recent Alembics this was the bass I played most often, but now it gets played only in questionable situations where I won't risk the Alembics

2003 Fender Custom Shop '59 Precision Sunburst - love that classic P-bass sound, it still gets quite a bit of use

2006 NS Design CR5M upright - broke both wrists and couldn't play bass guitar so I got an upright (finally had a good excuse!), this one's fun to play and sounds great, used frequently

1999 John Gray custom 5 natural Bubinga - original/previous owner was Gary Strater of Starcastle, I got this just before my Alembics, looks way cool and sounds great, haven't played it recently

1999 Alembic Rogue 5 wenge top - my first Alembic, I prefer the sound of this one to the 6str, so I swap between them for most of my playing

1998 Alembic Rogue 6 walnut top - my second (but not last!) Alembic, I like having that 6th string, but wish it had the same build (scale, electronics, top) as my 5str

So I'm still on my quest for the perfect bass but getting closer. It's a 6str Series II, 35 scale, ebony neck lams, ...

I'm thinking about holding a BIG sale.  I try to play them all in a gradual turnover but find myself sticking with just a couple.

Buying all those Basses.....what the heck was I thinking?!

It's time to give up the single life.

Hey, Loch, is that John Gray the guy from Champaign?

Peter,

Yes, he was in Champaign, IL for most of his bass building career. He's now in Washburn, WI. Not sure if he's still building basses, but he recently did some minor finish work on the 5st pictured below.

I'd be interested in a picture and/or review of the Gray, Loch - he once did some modifications for a friend of mine & the results were, shall we say, less than spectacular, but I've never come across an example of his own stuff.  If this is too far off subject, feel free to send it to my e-mail.

In order of acquisition.

1) 69 Jazz Bass in sunburst. My one and only instrument from 1976 til 2004(?)

2) Wishbass Scroll 4 string fretless made for me.

3) Wishbass Standard Spaulted Holly top 4 string fretless new off ebay.

4) MIM Tele, year unknown.

5) Frankenstrat, Fender body, Fernandes neck, with Alembic pups and electronics.

6) 96 Epic 4 string, well played by the previous owner, and absolutely spectacular.

7) Line 6 variax 4 string bass

8) Hohner BBass V. I have since modified it with active EMG's, a bone nut, and a Schaller bridge to take the string spacing from 16mm to 17mm. It has turned into a very nice player, and my only 5 string.

9) Custom Viola 4 string bass, body by Unorthodox Guitars and neck by USA Custom Guitars, with EMG electronics.

10) Wishbass Purpleheart Scarab 4 string fretless made for me.

11) Wishbass  Cherry Peanut 4 string fretless, ser #88, used of ebay.

12) Wishbass Purpleheart Hyper 4 string fretless, new off ebay.

Yes I like Wishbasses. Except for the guitars and the Line 6, I play them all, equally, ALL the time. The Line 6 is actually lots of fun to play, it's just a little heavy for jams.

I am turning 50 next February, and I recently have become enamored with the Music Man Stingray that is one of the Ball family reserve, with a flame redwood top. Georgeous. But I have never played a stingray, and at $2600, I could get a pretty nice Alembic. Hmmmmmmmm.

Right now, I'm down to four - I trimmed the collection down to just the basses I use. While the others were beautiful to own, I couldn't justify them sitting around not getting played.

So, in order of acquisition, and I've asterisked the ones I still have (the dates are the birthdates of the basses, where known):

Aria Cat Pro II (1988) (* Well, you never get rid of your first ever bass, do you? Also, I 'did a Jaco' on this and ripped out the frets and it makes a very nice fretless now)
Washburn Status
Westone Thunder 5 string (bleuch! horrible bass!)
Jaydee GA24 (1987) (I really miss this one, but the neck was just too whippy - just getting it from the car to the venue for a show would mess with my action so bad that the truss rod would need some adjustment)
MIM Fender Jazz Deluxe 5 string (nice bass, but this is the one that convinced me I wasn't a 5 string player - or a Fender player, for that matter!)
Alembic Mark King Sig Standard (2001) (beautiful, but HUGE!)
Alembic Stanley Clarke Deluxe (1993) (* my main stage bass - I can't see me ever getting rid of this!)
EBMM Stingray (1987) (* an ebay bargain from when the pound was strong and my main studio bass - just plug and play - you just can't get a bad sound out of this!)
EBMM Stingray 20th Anniversary (gorgeous quilted maple top, but just didn't sound as good as my old Stingray, so it never got used)
Status Graphite Kingbass Artist (2003) (* my backup stage bass, and the one I travel with - small enough to sling in an overhead locker)
Steinberger L2 (I already regret letting this go)

Despite my regrest, I can pretty much say I'm GAS-free, as far as basses go - I can't find anything I enjoy playing as much as my SC and my Kingbass. My GAS has moved over to amps, now . . .

Well, I have 6 basses, 7 if you count my kid's Fernandes Elephant Bass.

They are:
* Alembic Series I (1987 purchased used.  Least played.  Partly 'cause it's a 4 string and partly 'cause it rarely leaves the house.)
* Alembic Mark King Dlx / Series II 5 string (custom ordered in 2000.  My main bass)
* Marchlewski custom 5 string (2003, custom order. Tied with Roscoe for 3rd/4th in playing time)
* Roscoe LG-3005 fretless (2007 custom order. Tied with Marchlewski for 3rd/4th playing time)
* Fender Jazz (Total mutt.  Assembled from parts of 3 different basses plus Audere preamp.  Gets played when I just feel like clowning around or just to get back to my 4-string roots.)
* Devon Diamond J5 (bought used in 2008.  Currently gets 2nd most playing time)

Pics of the whole herd can be found in this thread:

Musicman Stingray 5
Mike Lull M4V fretless
Rogue 8-string (surprisingly good tone from such a POS)
brandless P bass clone that I built

Guitars:

Aria 12-string acoustic
Jackson Dinky
Washburn 7-string

Fender Tele with 1973 neck and electronics, Shark ash body (don't ask)

Oh, I must - I must!
Just what is a shark ash body?  A subspecies of ash?  A carving?  Do tell  (and, of course a picture)!

Peter

PS - I'm sitting here coveting your M-36 - nicest thing Martin ever made, IMHO.

Rami, all I have to say is NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! Just lay low, the fever will pass. Just don't purchase anymore.....for awhile. Your bass purchases reflect a part of you. Whomever your going to spend the rest of your life with should be able to accept you for who you are. As far as What was I thinking It's what we are all thinking. We are simply reaching out, sonically, emotionally and musically. Your purchases are part of the process. Your one of the few that inspires the club.

Gee, thanks for the kind words Barry.  A couple of times I tried to sell what I thought would be an easy Bass to part with:

I took it to my dealer for consignment.  Each time I got a terrible case of separation anxiety.  I RAN back, grabbed it and took it home again.  I'd spend a week or so apologizing to it. I'd make amends with a fresh set of strings and a good polishing and cleaning.  There's something about an Alembic that makes it so hard to part with.

Cozmik Cowboy,

the Tele (don't have a picture, but I will work on it) was owned by someone who decided that the original body should be carved out at the back like a strat body.  Made a royal mess of it.  A friend of mine bought it and put an Ash body on it, made by a company called Shark, one of the early replacement-part/do-it-yourself guitar part purveyors.  He then put it on sale on a consignment basis at a store in Ottawa.  Another friend of mine saw it, bought it, and showed up at my apartment offering a straight trade for the Tele against my hard-tail 1980 sunburst strat.  I took the trade. A good trade, and a good story too.

the Martin is indeed lovely - I just had the neck reset and some other work done on it, and it is truly a lovely guitar - best sound ever.  I note that Martin is making them again, and no wonder.

I will try to get a picture of the tele happening.

cheers.

Rick

95 Epic 4
98 Epic 5
2000 Tacoma Thunderchief AEB Guitar
Peavey P/J copy

Bass violin ? c. 1910 German

8 Tony Balleck violins (1960 ? 1997)
John Juzek (19-teens)
Laurentius Storioni (1770)

Francois Lupot (1750) Unfortunately this violin was broken apart in a car wreck.  The top was shattered beyond repair.  My father-in-law bought it for $2000, made a new top, patched together the rest, and ended up with a really nice fiddle, although the value is nowhere near that of an all original Lupot.
Hopf (date unknown)
7 other violins

2 banjos
Vega Senator 5 string ? late 1940s
Vega Pete Seeger 5 string ? early 1960s

3 trumpets including my 1970 Bach Strad from H.S.

2 Selmer clarinets (could only find 1 for the pic)
1 Selmer Bari Sax

2 upright acoustic pianos
1 electronic keyboard

Total = 38
