Title: Music hosting sites - opinions needed

In the event I ever record something of mine that I like (hasn't happened yet), what music hosting sites do you recommend?  What are the advantages and disadvantages?  I've been looking around, and haven't seen anything I like yet.

I was hoping you'd get more response to this Dave.  
I have a myspace site but wouldn't mind finding something better. Myspace gets a lot of traffic but the stinking ads and slow speed is a pain.

Dave, my band has been using myspace for about 3 years now.  Simple to use, and above all FREE.  
 
As stated before the ads and stuff are a pain, but until we can afford a real site it does fine for showing our music.

If you wanted to podcast your music I recommend libsyn.com
 
Its not free but its cheap.

i like reverbnation.com, but i'd second the myspace plug only because no one really cares to search any of the other sites. but i use reverbnation, anyway.

I think you can incorporate the Soundclick player in your MySpace page.  I want to see a Dave the Moderator MySpace page too.

+1 on myspace - not the most elegant choice, but it's fairly painless and quick to put your music up.  
 
Just make sure you sign up for myspace music and not regular myspace! (http://signups.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=signupBand target=_blank)

Myspace has driven me pretty much insane. It's those ads where people pretend to do videochat -- how can anyone watch those, and remain sane?

I spent a lot of time searching and reviewing sites before, and especially after, my initial post to this thread.  While I can understand Myspace's popularity due to ease of use and other reasons, it's just not for me.  Of the sites mentioned above, I checked out Soundclick and Garageband, plus many, many, many others.  I did not run across Libsyn or Digitalmusician; so I haven't seen them.  The one site I really did like, and may do something with if I ever actually record something that sounds decent, is Bandcamp (http://bandcamp.mu/).
 
I read practically everything on the site about how it works, and it seems to make sense for what I want to do.  I also looked at various sites that various bands had set up using the Bandcamp platform, and what they were doing seems to suggest that it works well.
 
It's a relatively young site, around a year if I recall.  One thing I noticed in my research was that a lot of music hosting sites have been started and have since disappeared, which is a consideration.
 
Another aspect of being young is that a lot of their plans haven't been implemented yet.  They wanted to start by focusing on the music first, the uploading, playing, and downloading; and I really like how that is set up.  They haven't yet done things like being able to post your tour dates.
 
So based on what I've seen, I think some of you may find it worth checking out.

This thread reminded me of  Bandzoogle (http://bandzoogle.com/index.cfm). It's a hosting company, but it's specific to bands so there's a music player. I don't have any first hand experience with them, but it looks sorta cool.

Bandzoogle looks very nice.  It's a bit expensive for where I am at the moment, and for the foreseeable future.

I think you are familiar with Archive.org.  It has always worked well for us.  
 
The search doesn't work to0 well though, so if I am looking for something I use google.  
 
For instance, if I were looking for my stuff, I'd google Supergroup archive  
 
Its free and there is so much other stuff up there.  
 
The embedded player works well and it also supports downloading of all different file types, compressed or uncompressed.  
 
Its got most *every* Dead show with a known recording to boot.

I didn't think about archive.org, but yes the player there does work well; and you are right about the availability of different file types.  Thanks!
