A lot like early Weather Report, very funky and obviously before they went commercial.
Can anyone tell me what that percussion device he was playing at the beginning is?? Like a mini marimba/xylophone

A Kalimba (or Kaliba) thumb piano. An African instrument I believe.
I love these, never owned one though.
