Are these really short shows or really long jams?

I got a call this morning from a friend at the show last night and he tells me that Warren introduced the guest drummer - Tipper Gore!

The music in the shows seemed shorter, not by a lot but it was shorter. The intermissions and breaks were long and the break between the acoustic set and the electric set was downright unprofessional. They followed it up with a prerecorded space jam which was ridiculous. Not a great show. It was pretty good on some levels, but there were long periods of mediocre music. Phil did sound great though. Warren could not bring it on the real long jams but he sounded really good on Alabama and Sugar.

What in thee name of all that is holy, is a pre-recorded jam?

It was silly. They started out space with some pre-recorded space jam (no musicians on the stage just to clarify that). I think they did it because the switch from the acoustic set to the electric set was taking forever. It sounds like a good idea to do the acoustic set, but it meant another 20-30 minute intermission then a 10 minute prerecorded bit of space and then the band coming on. Bad. The flow of the show was destroyed with the acoustic set. You had a 30 minute intermission, a 30 minute acoustic set and then another intermission that was probably 20-30 minutes more. Then space and drums was over 45 minutes, which is just too long. My wife actually fell asleep. I know she is not a deadhead, but I take her to a lot of concerts where music is played that she does not really dig and she has never fallen asleep for even a second.

Probably a connection between the two, I'd think.

Warren does sound great on some tunes, the more rock based stuff, but I think he needs another guitar player in the band for some of the other tunes. Warren can sing and he is great guitar player but he can't sustain it for 3+ hours like Jerry could on a good night. I have been listening to the download from the show and Warren did tear it up on Alabama and a lot of the first set but he got boring on the 2nd set on some of the tunes. The acoustic set also did not go over as well as has been reported. I think it ruined to show to be honest. I do think drums and space have outlived their purpose.

Don't even get me started on the ticket prices and the crowd either....

Sounds miserable to me.  Oh well.  I'm still looking forward to the Gorge.

Seems to me that it would be hard for the boys to stay interested in that sequence, let alone keep an audience interested regardless of how dedicated.  Unless Phil and Warren can really develop a dynamic rapport, I hope they cool it a bit.

Ken Kesey described the Dead audience as willing to accept hours of mediocre music for those moments of brilliance.  One of the things that kept me interested in Garcia and the Dead was that they were always 'pushing' it and looking for new ground.  It wasn't a nostalgia show by any means.

What we have here is a different animal imo.  Fans and perhaps band alike are looking to pay a little homage.  Of course things are different, its a different band.

I dont see the need to go exploring into the deepest jams for new ground. Its all new ground!

Stretching things out, syncopating, adding 'angles' to songs; that is the stuff I am all about.  I would think that there is plenty of room there to keep it interesting.  A set that is 2/3 jam seems like laziness to me.

Rant, rant, rant.

I was there and it was lazy. Especially consider the fact that they started the jam with pre-recorded music (about 10 minutes worth) and that Dark Star was not very good, space was not very good and that the drums weren't any good either.

I think with Warren they should have skipped all that and played to his strengths. Warren sounds so good on some tunes. The Dead need to can some songs, add some others and realize that they cannot play the same sets and do the same things they used to. With Warren there is a real opportunity to do something cool and different but I think they are missing the boat. I also look at some of the other set lists and this one looks like crap compared to the other nights.

You guys are making me feel better about passing this one up.  The ticket prices and Warren by himself, (no second lead like Kimock or Herring to help with the spacier stuff), just smelled like we're-only-in-it-for-the-money to me.  Your reports seem to confirm this.  What a shame.  As for me, I'm very much looking forward to the Allman Brothers in Oakland next month.

Allright, y'all... I was there for Greensboro and DC.  Greensboro was a little tentative, and the mix was a bit fluffy.  All the subs were flown so they weren't really hitting very hard.  Also Bobby's guitar was too loud.  Warren didn't really step out and take charge, but he did fit well into what the other guys were doing.  Chimanti (sp?) did really well.  I loved his Fender Rhodes, too.  What a great addition to the sound!

Another great thing was the scene in the lot. The weather could not have been more perfect.  It felt like 1990; crowded but very laid back and happy.  The average person was probably a bit older, but there were lots of kids there who would have been in grade school when Jerry died.

Amazingly, our buddies got to the lot several hours before we did and were able to hold us a spot.  Even more amazingly, the event staff helped us get to it even though they were routing traffic to a different area by the time we got there.  After the show we were able to hang out for at least an hour.  I wasn't really watching a clock at that point.

The vocals are better than they've ever been, and that's due to Warren, I believe. He sounds like a mix between Brent and Pigpen, and can hit the harmonies really well.

DC was more aggressive.  Warren seemed to take charge more, and the jams were serious; not just aimless noodling most of the time.  We snuck around behind the stage to get as close as we could to a speaker array for this show, which gave us a great view of the drummers.  Definitely NOT lacking in energy!  The sound was better than Greensboro, but still suffered from the flown subs.

I personally think the setlists have been great so far.

One thing I wasn't expecting was the tears.  I spent about a third of the first set just sobbing at various points.  This was the first time I'd seen them since '95, and that includes any of the members' solo projects.

I definitely didn't get the impression that tis is just about the money.  NONE of it seemed to be phoned in.  No, this isn't the best Grateful Dead ever, but it's the best Dead tour you'll be able to see this Spring. Maybe ever again...who knows?

I don't think it was just a money grab persay, but the ticket prices were ridiculous. I also got seats in a different section than what I paid for and they were horrible. Even the mail order days they never did anything like that to me.

My main problem really was the quality of the 2nd set. It does irritate me when I look at other set lists and compare it to this one. We got gipped. They mailed the set in totally until Sugar at the end and then they completely mailed in the encore. Im seeing sets from other shows and from what I hear they were played much better.

The other thing here is that with Warren there was a real chance to do something different. The 2 set, space/drum jam thing just does not work right without Jerry. Warren brings so much to the table but they are not playing enough to his strengths. I guess maybe I am in the minority of deadheads who wants something different. I don't want to revisit or recreate all the cool shows I saw before. I want to see Phil, Bob and Warren play together and bring it hard. Warren does sound like Brent and Pigpen, which makes for some really cool tunes.
