Okay I just had to start this thread
YouTube - 30 million hits to date
The charity CD she is on singing 'Cry Me A River', this is an outstanding rendition, is currently bidding at over ?1000, if any of the scottish members know someone who has this you have a gold nugget.
This is brilliant, a classic case of don't judge the book by the cover.
It is an absolute act of fate or God that this woman who is as ordinary as they get that her life is transformed in an instant.
I wish her the best of luck in her career and she is truly one of the most unlikely discoveries.
And to close..the song she performed must be one of the hardest musical type numbers to sing.

Yes, I do not have the words to express how moved I was to have seen this (on news segments) event.
What immediately came to my mind and heart was uplifting occurrences such as these affirm to me there is indeed a God.
-
Hah - I was just watching her on youtube last night. Like Paul (?) Potts (the opera singing mobile phone salesman) but even more so. What happened to him?
-
I was pretty moved by that....gotta love it when something good like that happens to people.
-
He is touring the world apparently
-
Both are awesome stories of a God given gift that has been in hiding.
In a world of Popular music where it's as much a visual product as an audio product it is refreshing to encounter music as it was meant to be, ART not PRODUCT.
Paul Potts was whom I first thought of when I watched the video of Susan. While I'm have never been a huge fan of Opera he did indeed open my eyes to a whole new world out there.

In my book, as far as female singers that have the purity of tone, vibrato, and phrasing, their are only a handful. Think, Patsy Cline, Karen Carpenter, KD Lang, Barbara Streisand... I really would have to add Susan Boyle here too. And, I never heard of her before this thread. As Simon may say, that is surprising.
-
Isn't it great to be thrown for a loop sometimes? I never watch those shows (no cable being the least reason) but heard of this story and I am happy for her; hopefully she isn't messed with too much...she deserves a clean chance.
-
I've not seen the show but Susan lives in the next town to me. Alot of people round here have said they know her and that she is a very kind and thoughtful person.
Tim; I'm going to add Allison krauss to your list.

I loved the clip and was actually watching it when the show initially went out. Im maybe 60 - 70 miles from her home town!
The audience were actually laughing at her before she sang a note because of her appearance (she suffered minor brain damage at birth) It was unfair and ignorant - but she gave it to them big time!
Good on you Susan!
John.

I've never heard her as yet, as I don't watch these sort of shows, but I'm going to give it a listen now, to see what all the fuss is about.
She's on the front of every national newspaper it would seem.
-
Well....................
I gave it a listen..................in fact I am still listening to it around 60 times later!!!
I run my computer sound through a 120 watts RMS Altec system, so I can wind it up for some serious sound.
To continue............
I watched both the reactions of the audience, and those of the judges, and was horrifed to see such behaviour.....even before she sang a note!! It was obvious that they were expecting a poor performance from a not so pretty woman.
Then.....she opened her mouth and sang.
A beautiful song............and a stunning performance. I'm still choked, even after so many listens.
Why are we so cruel to people just because they don't look like the beautiful people that we have come to associate with beauty on all levels??
I don't think I can say any more at present on this subject.........I'm just going to listen to it again.........and again!
Finest gift I have heard in years!!
Truly soul touching.

I wouldn't trust the judges in a show like that to be genuinely surprised by anything. They play into your expectations on all levels on these overproduced shows.
