Post by: hb3 on July 01, 2009, 08:49:31 PM
Box.net works!

I'm recording some solo piccolo stuff...here's a quirky little number called Slap....

We'll be premiering about a half hour of new tracks featuring the piccolo bass next Friday on a live365 station, www.radioenigma.com (http://www.radioenigma.com)

Nice Track !

It's just the piccolo and reverb...oh, and a little flange/phase on some of it...

So far I've got about 30-40 minutes of this stuff...some longer pieces. It's definitely weird how, listening to it, it seems to turn into these other instruments...lute, mandolin, sitar...

Here's another one, you can see what I'm talking about....

I really like this one too!  Beautiful music, great tone, great playing!

One thing I'm noticing about these box.net streaming tunes, they seem to automatically loop and replay.

I just noticed that too.

So here's the sort of stuff that bedevils me about this...listening to this in the studio for two weeks now, you start to hear all these far-out characteristics...for instance, at the beginning of that track, listening to that guitar line, you start hearing this single note held over it, like a flute. Call me crazy! I actually loaded up my mellotron and found the note and played it, and it sounded exactly like what I was hearing.

I'd actually appreciate confirmation on this as proof that I'm not insane. Something about the way the harmonics/frequencies are resonating or something?

I really like 'Umbrellas as well !   What is the string gauge and tuning ?  This tune really triggers positive mind space for me .  SWELL !

I noticed that extra part too, and at first I thought it was a keyboard background.  It may have something to do with how your reverb is set up.  Personally, I think it adds to the overall quality of the sound.

Wolf (Wolfy?), it's a slightly wacky tuning, but not that weird. And the typical piccolo strings. It's a very snappy sound, and, for whatever reason, very expressive.

Dave....oh yeah, I like it too. It's just freaky. It takes on this huge, gothic quality at times. Imagine listening to this for two weeks straight. I'm pretty tripped out!

'Tis done.

Actually, listening via the box player, it seems it plays through the tracks I've got loaded up there, which is currently four...so if you load the player via any of the two links above, it'll play through everything.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, they helped me finish.

Ok, here's the whole blessed thing, should anyone be interested.

I have to say, Slap turned out to be the best thing in here. The total throwaway, not even a song, etc. Funny how these things work. I'd probably rank the top three as Slap, The Umbrellas, and Haunted Houses.

The Kermess has a very folk-dancey, even medieval feel, named after the painting by Breughel (and poem by William Carlos Williams).

Positive Venus is a combination of two earlier pieces, Positive Violence and Venus, thus making Positive Venus.

Ariel is an attempt to do a pretty piece that doesn't turn ominous, like Haunted Houses. Also shorter. Haunted Houses is better, though.

June Gloom is sort of Indian-inspired, with a sitar type sound, and structurally, it's the same riff repeated at various rhythms. Check out the ending and tell me you'd think that's a bass.

Grazie.

I changed the title of June Gloom to Darjeeling Express. Why? Because it references both train sounds and Indian music. Not a movie I'm particularly interested in -- I think I saw about five seconds of it -- but I'd have to guess people who like that movie could also appreciate this music.
